THE DEATH OF MR LAZARESCU (15)
Origin: Romania (subtitled)
Year: 2006
Running Time: 150 mins
Directors: Cristi Puiu
Cast: Ion Fiscuteanu, Luminita Gheorghiu, Gabriel Spahiu
A black, deadpan comedy about a widower’s encounter with the health services. Ion Fiscuteanu is magnificent as the patient moved from hospital to hospital by uncaring yet comic staff.
An engrossing, naturalist drama about the flaws not only in healthcare but in modern humanity, with Luminita Gheorghiu moving as the nurse whose attentions give Mr Lazarescu – and us – hope.
