Origin: France subtitled
Year: 2008
Run time: 128 mins
Cast: François Bégaudeau
‘Classroom ethics are put to the test when the students begin to challenge his methods....’
Teacher and novelist François Bégaudeau plays a version of himself as he negotiates a year with his students from a tough Parisian neighbourhood. His class of teenagers, brilliantly portrayed by amateur youngsters, is bolshie and the tensions are exacerbated by the racial mix. Nominated for an Oscar and first French winner of the Palme d’Or for 20 years, Bégaudeau’s film offers no solutions to an educational problem that has relevance here too, and is suitably unsentimental.
