NHS Suffolk, Press release re:
Swine flu
‘Phase five’ – what does it mean?

In the light of the World Health Organisation’s decision to change the global swine flu situation to phase five, NHS Suffolk would like to inform people in Suffolk as to what this means.

Today, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's Chief Medical Advisor, said: “Phase five indicates that WHO considers a global pandemic to be imminent, whereas at phase four a global pandemic is not inevitable. A change to phase five is a signal to countries’ governments to ramp up their pandemic preparations – which we are already doing.

“We have been planning for a situation like this for some years. The preparations we have in place and are continuing to make will help to ensure we respond well in the event of a pandemic. If you have returned from an affected area and have flu like symptoms stay at home, call your GP or NHS Direct and you will be assessed and receive treatment if necessary.”

Households across Suffolk will soon be receiving an information leaflet about swine flu. This leaflet includes information about what swine flu is and how it could spread, what the UK government has done to prepare for a wider outbreak of flu, how you can protect yourself against flu and what to do if you have flu symptoms. The Department of Health has also now set up a Swine Flu information line 0800 1 513 513.

Dr Brian Keeble, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Suffolk said: “There are no confirmed cases in the East of England. We would also like to remind people there are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu based on good respiratory and hand hygiene.

“Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and regularly wash your hands – particularly before eating food.”

Founded 1927

THE ODD COUPLE
Female Version

In May Harleston Players are presenting a remake of Neil Simon’s long-running Broadway comedy The Odd Couple.

Unger and Madison are at it again – Florence Unger and Olive Madison that is. Instead of the poker party that begins the original male version, Ms Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit and the Pigeon sisters in the apartment upstairs have been replaced by the hilarious Costazuela brothers. Set in the eighties, this is a very funny play that you will not want to miss.

We are also pleased to announce that members of the audience will be able to order a 2 course pre-show supper for £10 at the Harleston Gallery, Gurney’s Bistro, 3 Old Market Place, Harleston (01379 855366).
They will open at 5.30pm to allow plenty of time to eat before the show.

U13 Girls - East Mini Champions!!

What a couple of days we had at the club last weekend! Not only did we host the Yazoo East Regional Mini Championships for the second successive year but our U13 Girls won their event on the Saturday and will now represent the region in the national finals at Nottingham (Beeston HC) on Sunday 17 May. They will be joined at Nottingham by the other East champions, namely Gresham's Prep School (U11 Boys), Bishop's Stortford College (U11 Girls) and Old Loughtonians HC (U13 Boys).

Our girls started a little slowly by drawing 0-0 in their first match against Kent College of Canterbury but thereafter their skill and fitness told as they went on to win their other five matches in fine style while conceding just one goal in the process. It was certainly a very exciting day watching our team progress through the event and at times I found myself acting like a parent – cheering them on and being anxious in equal measure!

Many congratulations to the squad and the coaching/management team of Nick McAllen, Nigel Wooltorton and David Brook on this outstanding victory. Together they have had a remarkable season of success and it continued when they won the Norwich City HC minis on Sunday! Best wishes to them at Nottingham in two week's time.

Bill Felton, the East President and Tournament Director, has kindly sent his congratulations to the club on our hosting of the two sunny and very well attended days and I join him in thanking all our members who helped with the organisation, i.e. Kirstin Cumming and her catering team, my car parking squad, David Cobbald (ground arrangements) and Nick and Shirley McAllen for their pitch watering – not a straightforward task as it had to be carried out within a tight match schedule on two quickly drying days.

This weekend we turn our attentions to the annual Magpies Tournament with play on Saturday featuring the Mixed Challenge and on Monday the day is devoted to Ladies' and Men's Club XIs. If you are not playing why not come along to watch the last play at Weybread for this season? Sunday is a day of rest.

News and comments in brief:

· A reminder that the AGM will be held in the clubhouse at 8.00pm on Thursday 18 June.

· Please let Jose Tibbenham (01379 854160) know as soon as possible if you intend to reserve a table at the Summer Ball to be held on Saturday 4 July. Tables are going quickly!

· A Young Umpire Day (aimed at players aged 10-13) is being run at Dereham HC on Sunday 17 May. Please see www.activenorfolk.org/events for more information.

· Congratulations to our U11 Boys who finished their fine season with victory last Sunday in the Norwich City HC Minis.

· Jazz On A Summer's Afternoon (Sunday 5 July in the Ball marquee). Bring your picnic and relax to the cool sounds of the Dixie Jazz Bandits. Gates open 3.00pm. Tickets £10, accompanied U18s free – please contact Mike the Mender (Withinshaw) on 01379 852002. This event is being organised by Harleston Lions, Scouts and Magpies HC.

· HMHC Golf Day at Bungay GC (Thursday 13 August) – playing in teams of four in men's, ladies' and mixed categories - £100 per team. Please contact me (01603 506925) for more details.

Britain's oldest nudist beach is to close.

The Suffolk beach will no longer be classed as nudist after this summer due to coastal erosion.

The 200 yard stretch of beach is being opened up to non nudists as the surrounding area has lost too much sand and shingle to coastal erosion. However, the decision has angered the hundreds of naturists who regularly make use of the beach at Corton, near Lowestoft.

The decision to remove the nudist status of the beach, which is hidden by wooden groynes and opened in 1979, was taken after four months of public consultation. Waveney District Council has said that the nudist designation will be revoked on November 1st 2009.

From November the nearest official nudist beaches will be at Holkham in Norfolk and Shellness, Kent.

NHS Suffolk, Press release re:
Swine flu

In light of the developing situation around swine flu cases in Mexico, the US and some other countries, NHS Suffolk would like to reassure members of the public that the risk of catching this influenza is very low.

NHS Suffolk has begun rolling out the Department of Health’s guidance and Health Protection Agency's advice to ensure that frontline staff are prepared should cases be confirmed in the UK.

The government has a stockpile of antiviral drugs (such as Tamiflu and Relenza) which should be sufficient to treat up to 50 per cent of the population if they become ill – a reasonable worst case scenario. We have been preparing our plans for a number of years and are among the most prepared countries in the world. The health secretary has said that the drugs have been shown to be effective if given in good time. In Suffolk we are putting the necessary plans in place to ensure their distribution if this situation becomes necessary.

It continues to be the case that anyone who has visited one of the countries or areas where human cases of influenza have been identified should monitor their health closely for seven days after the visit to the affected area. If during this period they develop a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches, they should stay at home and contact their GP by phone or seek advice from NHS Direct (0845 4647). s

Dr Brian Keeble, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Suffolk said: “We are working closely with our colleagues in the Health Protection Agency, and our partners in the NHS East of England to monitor the situation. There are no known cases of swine flu in Suffolk.”

General infection control practices and good hand hygiene can help to stop the spread of all viruses, including the human strain of swine influenza. This includes covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible, disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully, maintaining good basic hygiene for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people. Cleaning hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product and finally, making sure your children follow this advice.

Mike Daniels Driver Trainer 25 Years
1984 - 2009
(Mike is a contributor to the Waveney Valley Blog driving hints)

Mike started his driving school in Ditchingham in May 1984. Since that time he has sat beside thousands of people of all ages and taught them to drive. The motto from day one was always to teach drivers to drive and not just pass a driving test. He has always found it to be a very rewarding job and watching people succeed in starting from scratch who may have never been behind the wheel before and go on to passing the test first time and in doing so opens a whole new world for them.

Mike has seen many changes in 25 years, to name just a few the introduction of the theory test and hazard perception test for new drivers, the reverse parking exercise, more open road driving 60 and 70mph areas, the much needed tighter marking system on learner tests and the new photo card driving licence (remember it only lasts 10 years then needs replacing - or £1000 fine).

In the driving industry he has seen many changes such as instructors having to sit the hazard perception test, the introduction of CPD (Continuous Professional Development) in order to keep the instructor up to speed with re-training.

Mike has taken and passed the Diploma in Driving Instruction, and is a qualified Advanced Driver Trainer and covers Norfolk and Suffolk as a Diamond Advanced Supervising Examiner.

Also as a Fleet Trainer he works with many companies with Health and Safety at work. This is assessing Company Drivers and re-training to help Directors and Companies to keep safe and have a driving policy in place to avoid and Corporate Manslaughter problems.

Also he is a accredited Taxi Driver Trainer and teaches driving in classroom presentations. Recently he has included Trailer Towing courses (for the trainer details watch the Waveney Valley Blog).

Belonging to many driver training organisations especially a member of the Elite Master Tutors of Driving. Mikes interest outside work is with Rotary as a member and a Past President of Bungay Rotary Club, he devotes a lot of time to the movement and did serve on Rotary District 1080 as a Membership Chairman (Development) for 3 years.

Mike always says it is his wife Jenny who had been the backbone to all his business interests and assists him with the paper pushing. Jenny for the last nine years has been employed at The Castle Inn Bungay.

Their son Mark is a member of the team employed at R. Charlish of Bungay who maintain and keep the training vehicles in good order on the road. Mike can always be found somewhere giving after dinner speeches on 'The Life of a Trainer' and putting the word road safety over to the public.

During the years Mike has appeared on Television, and on BBC Radio Norfolk where he did a live phone in programme on driving with Louise Priest (what a lovely lady).

Mike now looks ahead to the next 25 years promoting and teaching road safety. He would like to see everyone taking an interest in road safety: driving the eco way, really taking care on our roads and drivers being better prepared to take driving test, as it is not cheap with a practical test now costing £62.

So thank-you to everyone for their custom during the last 25 years, all the good wishes and I look forward to serving the community safe driving for the next 25 years.

Ghosts
The classic play by Henrik Ibsen
Presented at six Suffolk venues by the Open Space Theatre Company

When Ibsen wrote the play in 1881 it provoked an uproar because it dealt with issues that a self-righteous, hypocritical society would have preferred to leave well under the carpet.

Those issues are still alive and kicking today - in particular assisted suicide, and the karmic laws of dependence arising, the sins of the father visiting the son.

Oswald Alving returns home on the eve of the official opening of an orphanage dedicated to the memory of his late father, Captain Alving.

It is Oswald's mother, Helene, who has kept the reputation of her husband intact during the ten years since he died and it is she who has organised the finance for the orphanage. However, tragedy lies just around the corner as the sins of the past return to haunt the present.

Ibsen's classic play is just as resonant today as it was more than 120 years ago and manages to touch the nerves of modern audiences still grappling with issues surrounding sexually transmitted disease and euthanasia.

Ghosts is the second play to be presented by the Open Space Theatre Company which was formed in the autumn of 2008. Its first production, One Glass Wall, a new play by Danusia Iwaszko, was widely praised.

GTUK British Taekwondo Championships

held at Stratford Upon Avon April 25th 2009

Bungay Taekwon-do Club

Another successful medal haul was brought back from the 2009 GTUK British Taekwon-do Championships at the weekend.

Competitors from Bungay Taekwondo-do club based at Bungay High School got up at 5am and travelled to Stratford Upon Avon in the heart of England in order to compete at the largest ever GTUK event and standards and competition were really high, especially as BBC3 were present and filming for a forthcoming documentary.

Fiona Larter (37) once again proved her dominance in the ladies sparring event and achieved a thoroughly deserved gold medal, the 3rd year in a row!

Nidge Bedingfield (aged 54) also achieved gold in the Veteran Male sparring section as well as a bronze for Patterns, his wife Sue (aged 48) won double silver medals whilst their youngest son Kal (aged 12) achieved a great bronze for sparring in a huge junior category.

George Crickmore (aged 14) continued his medal haul of the season with a bronze for Sparring and a thoroughly deserved silver for patterns.

Freddy Hoffman (aged 15) won a terrific bronze medal for sparring in his first ever GTUK competition.

Other students from the club were not quite as successful but did especially well in light of the standards on show, Jenna Akerman (12) came 4th in the junior patterns, Mark Porter (28) came 4th in a tough male sparring section whilst Sophie Akerman (12) won several rounds in the junior sparring section but missed out on the medals.

Clinton Gillett the club instructor and Director of Design Technology at the High School said “National standards seem to be getting better every year and we are raising our game accordingly, it was a shame that many others in the club were unable to travel due to other commitments as the medal tally could have been higher!”

All you ever wanted to know about
being a retained FireFighter in Suffolk

Firefighters fight 'fire' in the fog...

Last night was one of those rare occasions when we get off station to do some drilling...

Two pumps headed down to the old North Denes caravan site to fight a simulated house fire - actually a boarded up toilet / shower block.

Ladder 2, with Ian 'Billy' McMillan in charge, were the first pump in and got a hosereel onto the 'fire'. Almost immediately Billy made up for another pump to assist with the water supply.

We turned up on Ladder 1 and set about running a line of 70 from us to Ladder 2, supplementing our tank from a hydrant that was about four lengths away. I think it was nine or ten lengths of 70 to get over to Ladder 2 - and as the line got longer firefighters were disappearing into the thickening fog...

With a reasonable supply, the Ladder 2 crew were able to get two main jets working, one through a monitor.

Then we had a 'failure' of the Ladder 1 pump. We made a dam at the midway point along the line of 70 and let this start filling from the less than adequate hydrant. Four of us then lugged the LPP (Lightweight, Portable Pump - neither lightweight or particulary portable!) the 150 metres from Ladder 2 to the now filling Fire Service paddling pool. We were then able to pump water on up the line to Ladder 2, but were quickly over-running the supply from the hydrant.

And after a few minutes of this we got the 'knock off' from Mel. A short debrief in the gathering gloom was followed by a pretty brisk make up, especially as the clock was moving swiftly towards 2100hrs and the end of drill night.

These simulated incidents / off-site drills make our training more realistic - not just squirting water at the drill tower with a good hydrant just feet away. We also get seen by the public, our customers, which generates interest and the chance to have a chat with them - again far better than us being hidden away on the drill yard. And, finally, the time goes much quicker. Two hours spent in the classroom on the Scottish Modules or fannying around on station really does make the clock stand still...

Drinking On The Move

A lot of pressure here in the UK continues to stop people drink driving.
This is a MUST to help reduce our accident rates.

* * *
Australia also has a drink problem with their youngsters.

A 19 year old driver was stopped when police found her to be drunk, she was unable to give a breath test and was already banned from another offence. She was also not insured to drive.

Police were reported to say they were "Absolutely Outraged" because she was also putting a five month old child at risk, the police said this is the first time they had ever caught a mother driving while also breast feeding. The baby is now in care with relatives.

This has got to stop!
How many times do we hear young drivers copy from their parents and continue doing so in later life, but at least they may learn early how to bare left, or was it bare right? :)

See all our driving hints, always keeping you 'abreast' of road safety issues!

This Coen Brothers comedy has an incredible A-list line up - but all play self-obsessed fools of one kind or another. The plot involves Malkovich as a sacked drunken CIA agent, Swinton as his wife having an affair with the hapless Clooney. A computer disc of Malkovich's memoirs are found by McDormand and Pitt who try to sell it to the Russians. Typically deadpan, cheerily nihilistic and sharply funny.
