Waveney Valley BlogEMAIL NEWSGoes out to over 4,000 subscribers

Dear Reader,
Welcome to this issue of our Waveney Valley Blog news.
August is upon us, and hopefully we will now get some warm settled weather for the local holiday makers and tourists, to help them enjoy their visit to our region.
We have decided to put the images back into our emails, as we felt the 'text only with links' was less representative of what the Waveney Valley Blog is all about. So hopefully most of you will agree, the images make it a bit more interesting, and gets the messages across much better.
The images are all hosted on the internet, so you do not get a mass of attachments in your email box. If you cannot see the images, then your email programme is probably set up to restrict them.
For business people we just want to re-remind you that our 6 months £48 editorial plus banner advert offer runs out at the beginning of August 2009, going up to £60. However if you mention this email we will book your advertising at the £48 rate.
Hopefully if you have something to add to the Blog we will hear from you soon, but if not, enjoy reading the Waveney Valley Blog where we have loads of information for you to browse.
Best wishes - Nigel and Susan Bedingfield

The Pajama Game (U)
Origin: USA

Year: 1957
Run time: 101 mins

Director: George Abbott, Stanley Donen
Cast: Doris Day, Eddie Foy Jnr, Carol Haney

‘The quintessential 1950s musical comedy.’

A joyous screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, with Doris Day heading the union in a clothing factory and Eddie Foy Jnr as an efficiency expert. Bob Fosse's choreography is stunning, the songs (Hey there, Hernando’s Hideaway...) infectious, the props and colours vivid. At the same time, it is fast-moving, expert and as hard-hitting as it is splendidly performed and enjoyable. Jean-Luc Godard called it 'the first left-wing operetta'.

‘Stripped’

The gallery is open Friday – Sunday 11am – 4pm.

Exhibition dates: Friday 31st July – Sun 30th August

The new guest exhibition at Beyond the Image is a series of black and white portraits by Alex Kilbee who recently returned from South Africa. He was featured a few weeks ago in the Diss Express.

Alex writes:

'Stripped'
In these uncertain times we are left feeling that we have been worshipping style over substance.

So long as it looked shiny and new, we didn't care how well it was crafted - after all there would be something else new and shiny along in a minute wouldn't there?

Photography has not been immune to this.

Traditional portrait photography ideas have been discarded in favour of creating a 'Photoshop work of art' - something that is style over substance.

In this exhibition I hope to display images which capture not only my subjects' unique characters, but also strip my work back to the basics of portraiture and focus purely on the interaction between my subjects and I. Taking my work right back to it's beginnings and rediscovering the joys of simple, strong portraits.

Halesworth and District Riding Club

North Suffolk’s new Halesworth and District Riding Club (HDRC) has set off to a flying start. Within just two months of launching, the enterprising Club has held two shows and attracted a total of 68 members. In addition, earlier this month it became affiliated to the UK’s official riding club body, British Riding Clubs (BRC).

The latest show jumping show, held at Phoenix Equestrian Centre in Spexhall on a 60m x 60m all-weather manège, attracted over 50 entries, with competitors enthusiastically complimenting the Club organisers for the friendly and professional atmosphere throughout the day. With separate horse and pony classes from 2ft to 3ft 6” there was something for every level of rider from novice first timer to seasoned competitor.

Members already include some local riders with impressive credentials. HDRC committee member Hayley Chilver has recently qualified her own Giggy G, a 16hh, 12-year-old warmblood gelding, for the PetPlan Area Festival Open Novice class. She also achieved qualifying scores with local livery yard owner Rose Hart’s talented 12-year-old Welsh Cob gelding Walden Landslide, whose usual job is as an all rounder for Rose and a show jumper and Pony Club mount for several lucky local riders. He won both his novice classes with over 65% at the recent Festival qualifier at Geldeston.

Hayley and fellow HDRC member Rose Hart have recently passed the prestigious level 2 of the new UK Coaching Certificate. This is a government-run scheme to help raise coaching standards throughout the UK. Meanwhile Rose’s daughter, 22-year-old HDRC member Emily Hart, has demonstrated her considerable teaching talents by qualifying for the British Horse Society (BHS) Young Instructor of the Year competition. This initiative was introduced by the BHS three years ago to give aspiring young instructors and coaches the opportunity to display and develop their coaching skills. The finals will be held in the autumn.

HDRC chairman Nicky Virgo said: “We are delighted that the HDRC has already attracted so many members, including Hayley, Rose and Emily with their admirable talents. It confirms that there is a real need for a very local riding club in this remote area of Suffolk. We are also proud to have achieved affiliation with the BRC so quickly, which means we can now field teams to compete in affiliated competitions.”

Halesworth and District Riding Club was set up by ten local riders from Halesworth because they were finding it tough to cover the costs of regular travel to their nearest registered British Riding Club around an hour’s travel away.

HDRC will be holding a dressage competition on 22 August and a show jumping competition on 19 September. It costs just £5 to become a member of HDRC for 2009. Membership gives you exclusive access to the Club’s programme of competitions, training sessions and social events. For further information contact the membership secretary on 01986 873810, email hdrc09@tiscali.co.uk or visit www.phoenixec.co.uk to download schedules.
