Alerter
All you ever wanted to know about
being a retained FireFighter in Suffolk

So my alerter does work then!

Today, after 10 days without one, we get a shout...

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't wish harm, distress or anything else on the good folks of Lowestoft (well some I might...) but I'm like a bear with a sore head if we don't get shouts.

I don't ask for much. It doesn't have to be a major catastrophe, I'm not expecting half of Lowestoft to go up in flames, just something to get the heart pumping and the adrenaline flowing.

And, as always, when my alerter goes off after such a long time it nearly causes heart failure! Maybe we'll pick up a few jobs now, maybe the little oiks that play with matches will work out how to light them, maybe it will be another 10 days before the next shout...

Let's wait, and wait, and wait and see!

‘Love, Locomotives and Laughs.’

Generally regarded as one of the best comedies of all time. Buster Keaton is a Confederate train driver pursuing his train and his girl, both stolen by Union soldiers. The sight gags pile up hilariously, while the action is dramatic, witty, visually stunning and full of subtly delightful human insights. Four writers and two directors combined to produce 85 silent minutes of the most inspired action comedy ever seen.

Halesworth and District Riding Club

Dressage success for Halesworth Riding Club
The Halesworth and District Riding Club (HDRC) Dressage Show, held last Saturday 22 August 2009, kept organisers busy with a strong turnout of keen competitors.

With classes from Intro to Elementary level the show, which is only the HDRC’s second dressage event this year, drew a total 44 entries and the sun shone on them all throughout the day.

Compliments about the new Club flowed freely, to the delight of the organisers. Committee member Sarah Shephard said: “It makes our hard work an absolute pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of the competitors and to hear positive comments such as ‘very professionally run, extremely friendly and the scores and results were done very quickly’! The response we have had to the HDRC since we launched in May has exceeded our expectations already and membership is continuing to grow.”

Halesworth and District Riding Club was set up by ten local riders from Halesworth because they were finding it tough to cover the costs of regular travel to their nearest registered British Riding Club around an hour’s travel away. Shows are held at Phoenix Equestrian Centre in Spexhall on a 60m x 60m all-weather manège,

HDRC will be holding a show jumping competition on 19 September and a cross country training day at Boundary Farm, Framsden on 3 October. It costs just £5 to become a member of HDRC for 2009.

Membership gives you exclusive access to the Club’s programme of competitions, training sessions and social events.

For further information contact the membership secretary on 01986 873810, email hdrc09@tiscali.co.uk or visit www.phoenixec.co.uk to download schedules.

Suffolk 'Ark' to save threatened white-clawed crayfish

Our white-clawed crayfish in rivers across East Anglia are under threat

A lake in Suffolk is being established as a safe haven "ark" for the British native white-clawed crayfish which is under threat from an American invader.

The crustaceans look like miniature lobsters and used to be widespread in Britain's rivers. However, their numbers have fallen sharply due to the rise of the aggressive signal crayfish. The Environment Agency is transferring white-clawed crayfish to a "secret" lake which will become an "ark" home.

The crayfish will be rescued from rivers in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.
The invading species out-competes the white-claws for food and other resources as well as carrying a disease called crayfish plague.

Lethal disease
An Environment Agency spokeswoman said: "Although the signal crayfish are not affected, this disease is lethal to our native species and has wiped them out from whole river systems in a matter of weeks.

"The new project is aiming to prevent this by developing an innovative crayfish 'ark'.

"The Environment Agency, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership have joined forces and have already found one landowner keen for his lake to become the first 'ark'.

"The lake has been thoroughly checked for suitability and passed with flying colours.
"Even nearby rivers were checked for non-native crayfish to ensure there was no risk of the new site being invaded."

The spokeswoman said the project was being supported by funding from Suffolk Environmental Trust, Essex and Suffolk Water and the Environment Agency.

She said: "In time, it is hoped that the transferred animals will breed and grow into a healthy population in this lake."

The Environment Agency has appealed for anyone with a large pond, lake or gravel pit who would like it to be considered as an ark site to contact them.

New Suffolk Secrets Website Launched:
Suffolk Secrets, the largest independent holiday cottage agency in Suffolk , have released their brand new website today.

Suffolk Secrets are a family owned business that has seen steady growth over the past 14 years to its market share leader today with over 250 self catering cottages.

The company moved into the bottom two floors of the Old Water Tower on the Southwold Common in 2005 and within 2 years had developed the top two floors to accommodate their growing numbers of local staff. They have now received planning permission to add a sympathetic and interesting extension to the back of the existing tower, which will be completed in October 2009.

Over the years Suffolk Secrets has invested significantly into cutting edge technology to maximise their staff time to look after what matters; the customers, the holiday cottages and the holiday cottage owners. The new website released today is another step in this direction, allowing customers to find their perfect holiday cottage quickly and easily.

Director Irene Alexander said, “We are all hugely excited and proud of the new website released today and the positive experience it will give our customers over the coming years”.

Developing a holiday cottage website might not be as simple as it first appears. Head website developer Alex Wyett for Carlton Software states, “we have invested significant time and effort to decipher the optimum user experience when booking a holiday cottage online…it is really about giving the customer all the information they need about a holiday cottage or area of Suffolk as quickly and simply as possible.”

Take a look at the brand new Suffolk Secrets website today at www.suffolk-secrets.co.uk. In the current economic climate it is great to see local business thriving and investing money in online developments.

Workplace well-being is top of the agenda for Suffolk’s employers!

More and more of Suffolk’s employers are putting workplace well-being at the top of their agenda as the county's first ‘Suffolk Business Minded’ forum is to launch on 29th September at the IP City Centre, Ipswich.

A recent report shows that the Mindful Employer Charter is taking off in the county. The forum, which follows on from the successful launch of Suffolk Business Minded earlier this year is open to all local businesses and employers.

The forum will present local businesses with an opportunity to meet, network and share knowledge on best business practice around stress, anxiety, depression and mental health issues in the workplace.

There will also be opportunities to talk with leading local experts in HR & Recruitment [ SOS HR ], Occupational Health [ Gipping. ] ,employment law [ George & Co. ] and supported employment [ Workwise WorkLink ] , all of whom have been involved with the campaign from the start.

The forum will meet quarterly and be led by the business needs of local employers, with the first forum meeting being launched on Tuesday, 29th September 2009 at the IP City Centre, Ipswich. Running from 6pm - 8pm, it will establish the members’ needs and use this to lay the foundations for the future direction of the forum.

There will also be a workshop to help employers identify development areas within their business around these issues, and assist them in establishing strategies to move forward.

We will also be hosting two guest speakers who will be talking about:

The Mindful Employer charter and how it can help your business as well as Mental Health First Aid and its role in the workplace.
Guest speaker - Lesley Bailey [Development Manager, InterAct Ltd, MHFA national trainer]

IAPT [Improving Access To Psychological Therapies]
Find out how this service can help your employers stay in work whilst they get treatment they need for stress / anxiety related issues.
Guest speaker - Hilary Edington, consultant psychologist for IAPT

Refreshments and a buffet will be provided, and there will be opportunities to network with other local like minded businesses.

Join us and become a leader on well being in the workplace by booking your place now… there’s no charge!
The forum is sponsored by Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, and is free to attend by local employers / business managers. Roman River Festival
Coastal Essex, 7-11 October 2009

Over a long weekend this Autumn, five outstanding churches along the picturesque Roman River valley in coastal Essex will be filled with music played by world-class classical, jazz and folk musicians.

The festival is a celebration of both music and our North Essex countryside, with its haunting coastline, delicious seafood, lovely villages and country walks. Charles Bartlett, past President of the Royal Watercolour Society, is this year’s Festival Artist.

Expect fireworks at our opening concert, in which Bill Tamblyn's Quire partners Daisy Jopling, violinist from Fingringhoe turned New York gospel reggae star. Daisy is used to playing to crowds of thousands, and this is no ordinary choir – their fizzing performance and life-affirming energy is a perfect match for Daisy’s unique spirit.

James Willshire, who has already won prizes in three international piano competitions, will be in the classical artist spotlight at our traditional candlelit concert at Fingringhoe Church. Our chamber concert at Layer Marney will include Brahms' majestic Horn Trio with Evgeny Chebykin (winner of the coveted Dennis Brain prize at the Royal Academy of Music) and Britten's beautiful Serenade for Tenor, Horn and piano, featuring the impeccable musicianship and silvery tone of tenor Christopher Lemmings.

Bella Hardy, at 25 already one of the shining lights of the folk scene and famed for entwining her hypnotic voice with her own fiddle accompaniment, will give an intimate folk recital at Copford Church, whose frescoes are an architectural treasure of international repute.

At East Mersea church we will be celebrating the 350th anniversary of the birth of one of our greatest composers, Henry Purcell, whose songs range from the achingly beautiful Lament to ribald drinking songs. In the very special atmosphere of Abberton Church, which overlooks the reservoir, Jennifer Morsches will perform two of the most loved of Bach's solo cello suites.

The festival will end with our popular jazz supper event, this year featuring New Orleans, blues, salsa, calypso, rumba, tango and more from The Brass Volcanoes, an irrepressible band of virtuoso musicians. Featuring a sousaphone (from the tuba family), infectious rhythms and a mixture of well-known melodies and brilliant improvisations - who knows, the wooden parquet of Fingringhoe Village Hall may even become a dance floor!

Everyone is welcome. We offer £3 tickets to anyone under 30 years old and a Festival Pass at a generous discount. We are also reducing our carbon footprint and general environmental impact.

Ticket prices range from £3-£12. To be added to the mailing list please contact zelie@romanrivermusic.org.uk or 01206 729 356. You will receive two mailings a year: one with advance information and one with a brochure and booking form for the Festival.

In the words of a festival-goer last year: “We are so lucky to be able to hear and watch first class musicians in our rural setting ... a wonderful feast.” www.romanrivermusic.org.uk

NORWICH NGS
JUNGLE GARDEN WINS NATIONAL GARDEN COMPETITION

Garden owner Jon Kelf celebrated a win for Norwich this weekend. Although Norwich born and bred his victory was not in relation to the performance of his football team, Norwich City. Jon has won the Daily Mail 2009 National Garden competition for “Best Garden in Britain.” Jungle Garden was voted for on-line by the public.

Jon opens his garden once a year since 2008, for the National Gardens Scheme in Norfolk who encouraged their garden owners to enter. Last year’s competition winner was NGS “Windy Ridge” garden in Shropshire. This year’s competition also featured NGS gardens in Hampshire and Lincolnshire in the final five, gardens renown for their quality, character and interest.

Jon Kelf said “It was really prestigious that the garden was accepted for the National Garden Scheme to open two years ago. I never anticipated that this would lead to to gaining a place in the finals and actually winning “The Best Garden in Britain” competition. Jungle Garden was one of the smallest gardens and the only one surrounding a new house. I hope it will encourage new visitors and more small and exotic gardens to open for the NGS in Norfolk”.

The Jungle Garden is a small town garden approximately twenty-six feet by sixty feet with five levels of decking surrounded by dense, lush exotic planting. It has over two hundred different and unusual types of plants including palms, bamboos, bananas, gingers, cannas and more. Jon opened for the National Gardens Scheme on the 16th August. Little did the visitors know they were visiting the potential winner!

NGS County organiser Anthea Foster said “The Norfolk NGS congratulate
Jungle Garden on winning the “Best Garden in Britain Award”. Appreciation must also be given to all the other Norfolk NGS gardens that entered. There have been other city gardens in previous years but Jungle Garden is unusual with its exotic planting, small dimensions and layers of decking compared to a more formal garden. The interest in garden visiting has increased over the years with the economic climate and climate change. With the inclusion of smaller gardens, allotments and town gardens, many visitors take away not just plants but gardening and design tips. The garden owners give so much time to opening, not just gardening but promoting their open days and providing visitors with a great day out while raising money for the worthwhile charities of the NGS. It is a great acclaim for Jon Kelf and the Jungle Garden but also for Norwich, Norfolk and the Norfolk National Gardens Scheme”.

Visit your local Tourist information Centre to pick up a Norfolk NGS Gardens leaflet or visit www.norfolkgardens.org

If your garden is of high quality, character and at least forty-five minutes interest Contact County Organiser Fiona Black to discuss opening your garden. Tel 01692 650247.
