St. Nicholas at St. Nicholas Street

During September the Waveney Springs Art Collective produced an art trail in and around Diss. Merrick Hill Insurance in St. Nicholas Street displayed Ned Pamphilon's The Vision of Paine and visiters included BBC Radio Norfolk's Stephen Bumfrey and local MP Richard Bacon.

Ed Nottingham at Merrick Hill was so pleased with the activity he invited Ned to continue displaying artwork in his office window. English artist Ned Pamphilon returned to East Anglia in 2008 after 10 years based in Istanbul, Turkey, where Father Xmas is known as Noel Baba. Paintings of Baba Noel and Nativity Chimney Stories can be seen over the festive season:

Noel Baba, or rather St. Nicholas, was born in the 4th century and lived in Demre (Myra) on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast. He was born to a warm sunny climate with green hills and sea breeze in the small village of Patara. At a young age, his parents died leaving a large inheritance enabling him to give generously to the poor and needy. He intended his donations to be secret, but these things get out.

One story tells how a poor old nobleman with 3 beautiful daughters lived in a run-down palace with barely enough to eat. The girls couldn’t marry because there was no money for a wedding. Nicholas secretly deposited bags of gold through an open window, but when one night the window was closed, Nicholas climbed the roof to send a cascade of gold down the chimney and into stockings left hanging to out to dry by the daughters. Years later Nicholas had become a famous holy man and his story was remembered as people began to hang up empty stockings and ‘secretly’ fill them for their children.

Nicholas visited Jerusalem before he grew too old and on his return became the new Bishop of Myra. He continued his generous ways performing miracles and amazing deeds; he saved sailors from drowning, innocents from harm and Myra from famine. His interests remained very much with children and he was loved and respected so much the people built the church of St. Nicholas, still there today. Some alleged his bones were moved to Italy, where years later another church in his remembrance was built. The story was retold and the children of Europe began to hang stockings on the eve of 06 December, St. Nicholas’ Day. He was portrayed wearing green, yet the tradition was melded with 24/25 December and in the 1930’s a US company, marketing a fizzy coloured sugar water drink called Coke, added the red imagery for their advertising campaign.

’Twas the night before Christmas

’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes - how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Puzzle House Pantomimes are back with the classic fairytale SLEEPING BEAUTY, which is adapted into a traditional family pantomime.

Six actors portray a host of characters in a show full of songs, live keyboard music, thrills, spills, slapstick and silliness.

King Cameron and Queen Camilla's's delight at the celebrations for their daughter's christening, turns to dismay when Morgueena, the wicked witch, appears at the castle.

Furious that she was not asked to attend, she makes the chilling prophecy that Princess Emma will be known as Sleeping Beauty, for she will not live beyond her sixteenth birthday.

Nanny Norah Bone, Hogwart – the sorcerer's apprentice, the castle ghost, and all the Princess's friends join forces to try to thwart the evil witch.

There will be puzzles and riddles to solve during the adventure... and that will need the help of the audience!
Skidding? "Stop the Panic" see you there

On Saturday 20th November 2010 I attended the Skid Control Course offered by Shawn Taylor Racing Norwich, as Guest of Shawn Taylor the Managing Director... the courses are held north of Norwich, arriving at the venue in very foggy conditions, where everyone had assembled ready for what would be a very educational morning all about skid control, complete with lots of fun...

After a greet and meet from the very helpful staff of the Race team and everyone taking part were told of the house rules and health and safety.

Shawn explained an in depth look at Under-steer and Over-steer, and the importance of easing off the gas pedal throughout roundabouts in case of oil spills...

Chris who would be the Trainer for the day was introduced to the class, a very skilled Trainer who would put all at ease...

The seven drivers for the session were equipped with Helmets, hence health and safety, and shown to the cars being used for the training, BMW 328i Saloons.

Shawn Taylor Racing had their race cars on display, this year they have their own STR CUP RACING at all Circuits and have just developed a 6 litre race car being the only one in Europe.

This course is really good with everyone going through a stage by stage set up and onto sliding and being able to cope with all types of control.

I must say I was joined by Susannah Roberts a local Grid Girl on Race circuits and Fashion Model. - Susannah who was amazed how much there was to learn about skidding and several times commented the words "this is real awesome".

I must admit starting from scratch and never known what it's like to be in a skidding car, Susannah really done well and did much better than the lads...

I can really recommend this course to all, its a life saver, we now have the very bad weather approaching so its nice to know at least one young lady is safe out there.

As contributor of motoring hints weekly to the Waveney Valley Blog and Norwich City Net, I feel I must say Shawn Taylor does not know of my write up of this course, never asked for advertising, I just feel all drivers should take this up.

I would also mention you will be seeing Susannah Roberts GRID GIRL 2011 on the track at meetings, and Susannah has just won the local Miss Slinky 2010 Competition.

Well Done Susannah.

Sausage Rolls

225 g (8 oz) **Self-raising Flour
100 g (4 oz) Margarine
30 ml (2 tbsp) Cold Water
225 g (8 oz) Sausage Meat
A lightly greased baking tray.

**Please note you can use plain flour but self-raising gives the pastry a softer more crumblier texture.

* Preheat oven to 230 C, 450 F and Gas Mark 8.

* Put the flour into the basin and add the margarine.

* Lightly rub in the margarine using your fingertips. Lift the mixture up as you rub the mixture together. This allows the air in and helps to have a lighter pastry.

* Using a knife, add a little water at a time, stir the mixture until you have a nice stiff consistency.

* Kneed the mixture in the bowl until it becomes one piece of dough.

* Turn onto a floured board or work surface and roll out to about 7.5 cm (3 inch) wide, keeping the dough to the thickness you prefer.

* Roll the sausage meat out with floured hands to the length of the pastry.

* Place the sausage meat onto the pastry strip, and lightly brush the edge of the pastry with milk to help it seal together, roll up the pastry.

* Cut into lengths and place onto the baking tray.

* Make a couple of cuts along the tops then lightly brush them with a little milk to glaze.

* Place into the oven and cook for about 20 minutes until golden brown.

* Enjoy!

Pharmacies can help you over the festive period

Don’t forget some pharmacies will open on all the public holidays over the Christmas and New Year period.

That’s the message from NHS Suffolk as it encourages people to choose well and make sure they go to the right place for treatment.

Lynne Wigens, NHS Suffolk’s director of patient safety and clinical quality said: “The festive period is a busy time for the NHS, with busy services and staff. It is really helpful if people don’t overlook their pharmacy as this is a great a place to go for help and advice.

“If you are unlucky enough to suffer a minor injury or illness over the holidays think about whether your pharmacist is the person you could ask for assistance the first instance.

“By choosing this form of treatment everyone can help reduce the pressure on A&E departments and the 999 service, who can sometimes end up dealing with minor medical problems that could easily be dealt with by over-the-counter medicine bought from the pharmacy.

“A number of pharmacies across the county will be opening for limited hours on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 27th December, New Year’s Day and 2nd January 2011 – so make sure you know the location of your nearest one, just in case you need it.”

You can find out the opening hours of your local pharmacy by calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or by visiting www.nhs.uk

The Fisher Theatre Pantomime
Robin Hood
running from 18 Dec 2010 - Jan 2 2011

It’s that time again ...."Oh yes it is" ......to hold onto your seats, because the tale of Robin Hood is bounding its way onto the stage at the Fisher Theatre, Bungay. Theatre-goers will be pleased to hear, that once again Steve Ace will be the driving force behind this year’s must-see Panto.

Steve said "Its a pleasure to be returning for our 4th year and each year seems better than the year before. The audience has grown and grown. Our first panto here we did 11 performances, this year we are doing 25! The audience knows that as soon as the overture begins they can sit back and enjoy themselves. Kids, mums and dads, aunts, nannas and grandads, all laughing, and joining in together, there’s nothing like it."

Steve continued "you see, when I started writing scripts, I was working for a large theme park and the audience went to the shows for free, so you had to engage them from the very start, and keep it going to the end, otherwise they simply walked out and went on a ride! So all my shows have a fast pace, a joke in almost every line, short songs, and lots of ad libs, topical gags, and yes, the same old stories that everyone loves”.
Les Hoare the Marketing Manager said "It’s that ingredient that makes our pantos so popular, non-stop fun rooted in a traditional story. Here you get the real deal and feel part of what’s going on.”

Back again with Steve this year are Gavin Dean playing Robin, Clare Durrant as Maid Marion, and sharing the role of the Sheriff are Dan Hanton and the well-known previous Manager of the Fisher Theatre, Chris Moore.

Add the dancers and local children playing the babes and it looks like another cracker.

WELCOME RETURN – BUT FOR HOW LONG?

In my final Musings of 2010 there is plenty to comment on from last weekend's welcome return of outdoor hockey. However, we might not be so lucky this coming weekend with the threat of a return of the cold weather although the emphasis will be on more indoor hockey after last Saturday's and Sunday's excellent youth performances.

At Weybread last Saturday the Boys' Development played extremely well to record their first win of the season over Dereham with goals by Sol Barker, Kieran Peters (showing centre half Dad how it is done!) and Archie Winter (2).  Meantime the Ladies' 2nds were gifted an early goal against Watton only to be pegged back in the second half by a fine strike from the edge of the circle. Despite going close on a number of occasions Melissa Hunter and her team were unable to find the winner in an evenly contested match.

It was then the turn of a strong looking Men's 2nds to go one better than the Ladies when they took on Norwich City but it was not to be. After early Magpies' pressure City - who exercised their right to decline the invitation to play on the water-based pitch after it came available at short notice - scored a lucky looking goal but there was no luck about their well worked second after the break and, with their good tackling and goalkeeper in top form, they ran out deserved winners. A 2-0 defeat was a disappointing result for Magpies, who were missing Robbie Kinsella, after their good run of form.  Shortly afterwards the Men's 6ths and Ipswich Cranes 2nds grabbed the chance to play on the water and with skipper Kevin Ridley inspiring his young team with a display of hard running and accurate passing the 6ths ran out 3-1 winners of a very enjoyable match also notable for a mishit shot from Jonathan Aldridge which eluded the keeper. It was a toss up as to who was the most embarrassed, the keeper, Jonathan or, even, the ball as it reluctantly went over the line!

Away from home the Men's 3rds scored a vital 4-2 win over second placed Norwich City 2nds with goals by Philip Cobbald, Gavin Cole (2) and skipper Matt Brand edging the team away from the four relegation spots, while the Ladies' 4ths and Ladies' 5ths beat Pelicans 3rds (7-3) and Broadland 2nds (3-1) respectively to cement their places at the top of their league. The Men's 5ths went goal crazy away to North Walsham 2nds winning 10-0 with Chris Thornton leading the way with five goals supported by James Goodson (2), Rob Goodson, Joel Nelson and skipper Will Main.

On Sunday the Men's Veterans beat Indian Gymkhana 6-2 to move into the last 16 of the EHB Cup in the most eventful and enjoyable game I witnessed all weekend. Magpies were twice behind but goals by Philip Cobbald (2), the second a thumping short corner on 35 minutes, and Jonathan Aldridge ensured we were 3-2 up at the break. Thereafter further goals came from Roger Kent, Stuart Peters and Martin Reader with keeper Murray Graham making a vital save at 4-2. The first half was especially notable for a 'green' given to Roger Kent for 'simulation' in the Indian Gym circle. Did he fall over his shoelaces? A cruel teammate suggested at tea (to friendly merriment) that it would be the only card Roger receives this Christmas!!

On Saturday the U16 Boys got our indoor season off to a great start by winning their three matches to clinch the East championship in Colchester thereby qualifying for the national finals to be played in Wolverhampton on Saturday/Sunday 22/23 January. On Sunday at the same venue the U16 Girls made it a Magpies' double by also becoming East Champions when they won their three matches to join the Boys as national finalists. Congratulations to the players and managements (and supporters!) of both teams.

Good luck to our U18 teams (Boys and Girls) as they seek to emulate the U16s when they play in their East championships this coming weekend at Colchester – namely the Boys on Saturday and the Girls on Sunday. Meantime it is 'good luck' also to the Ladies' 1sts (Saturday) and Men's 1sts (Sunday) as they compete in their respective East championships (Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall, Cambridge – please see website for fixtures) in preparation for the two weekends of the national league (Div 1) commencing on Saturday/Sunday 8/9 January.

Please also see the website for details of the five rearranged Ladies' outdoor matches it is hoped we will be able to play this Saturday. Good luck, of course, to our teams.

The Durham University national league first teams will be paying a training visit to the club on Monday/Tuesday 10/11 January (following matches in London) and will play practice matches against our first team squads with the Men playing on the Monday and the Ladies on the Tuesday – both matches to start at 7.15pm.

I hope that all members, parents, supporters and other readers of this column are able to have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Musings will be back in January. In the meantime the Home Page of the website will be updated with any significant developments.

Give the gift of time this Christmas

For many of us Christmas is a happy occasion when we spend time with our family and friends.

However, for many older people the festive season is one of loneliness and, combined with the cold and icy weather, it can leave them vulnerable to ill health and accidents.

This Christmas, NHS Suffolk is asking people in the county to give the gift of time to an elderly friend or relative.

Olive Quinton, health improvement manager with NHS Suffolk said: “Making time for an elderly person can give them a great boost and it needn’t take up too much of your time.

“Popping round for a cup of tea and a chat or offering to take them shopping can make all the difference to someone who is alone and vulnerable.

“During the cold weather, paying a visit is also a good opportunity to check they are staying warm and are eating well, having hot drinks and staying safe.

“Check their heating is working - and turned on. Make sure they have a supply of tinned food they can use should the cold weather prevent them from getting out. Also make sure they are not vulnerable to accidents in their home, for example, by wearing old and worn slippers that could cause a trip.”
