How FAST could you be in a crisis?

Would you know what to do if someone near you was having a stroke? Would you even know how to spot the signs of a stroke?

Every year 110,000 people in England have a stroke. It’s our third leading cause of death, and there are at least 300,000 people living in England with disabilities as a result of stroke.

In Suffolk 1,000 people are treated for a stroke at Ipswich or West Suffolk Hospital.

That is why tomorrow (Tuesday, 1 March) the Government is relaunching its television ad campaign to remind people how to spot someone having a stroke and what they can do to help them.

As well as finding out what to do, you can also take an interactive test online at www.nhs.uk/actfast now. And why not pass on the message to friends and family.

Sandie Robinson, lead for commissioning and development in stroke, said. “Our stroke care in Suffolk is improving with more stroke patients being treated on specialist stroke units. We still have much to do to ensure we are all able to recognise the early symptoms of a stroke and to ensure someone with a suspected stroke gets to a hospital as quickly as possible. In the case of a stroke, time is crucial – access to early treatment can reduce the level of brain damage and improve long-term outcomes.”.

“Relaunching the FAST campaign will further raise the awareness of what to do, enabling us to help more people have a better recovery.”

Although they can occur in people of any age, strokes are especially likely to affect people over the age of 55. Prompt action after a stroke is crucial as it can prevent further damage to the brain and help make a full recovery. Delay can result in major long term disabilities.

This is why it is vital for as many people as possible to learn how to Act FAST.

Face - has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?

Arms - can they raise both arms and keep them there?

Speech - is their speech slurred?

Time - time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs.

Once a patient has been diagnosed as having had a stroke they are taken to a specialist ward at one of our two major hospitals to receive the care they need.

NHS Suffolk, and Ipswich and West Suffolk Hospitals, have been working together to improve that level of care and the number of patients able to receive that treatment. At the moment 83% of stroke patients are treated on a specialist stroke unit. NHS Suffolk wants that to be 90%. That breaks down as 90% at Ipswich and 74% at West Suffolk.

Sandie said: “Stroke is an often underestimated cause of death and disability, when in fact it is one of the major causes of death in this country – even for people who survive a stroke it could leave them permanently disabled. However, it will come as no surprise to many people that stopping smoking, eating healthily and taking exercise can dramatically reduce the chances of having a stroke.”

1. What is a stroke?
A stroke is a brain attack. For your brain to function, it needs a constant blood supply, which provides vital nutrients and oxygen to the brain cells. A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off and brain cells are damaged or die

Symptoms and actions
A patient might feel dizziness, communication problems, difficulty talking and difficulty understanding what others are saying, problems with balance and coordination, difficulty swallowing, numbness/weakness resulting in complete paralysis of one side of the body, and loss of consciousness in severe cases.

2. The Government's Act FAST television campaign is being re run from 1 March for three weeks to equip people with the knowledge to help family, friends and others should a stroke occur.

Custom
Car Birthday Cake
suitable for lactose intolerance

Chocolate Cake
600g (21 oz) Self-Raising Flour
675g (24 oz) Castor Sugar
75g (3 oz) Dark Cocoa Powder
300g (12 oz) Soya Margarine
6 Medium Eggs
15 tbsp Soya Milk
Few Drops Vanilla Essence

Icing
1kg of ready to roll Regal-Ice Icing
Food colouring

1 Deep Based Tin

* It is best to make the sponge the day before you need to decorate it. This allows the cake to cool and slightly harden.

* Heat oven to 180, 350 F, Gas Mark 4.

* Prepare baking tin with grease proof paper.

* Put dry ingredients into a big bowl and mix.

* Rub in the soya margarine.

* Beat the eggs with the soya milk.

*Stir in the egg mixture and vanilla essence into the dry ingredients.

*Place the mixture into the tin and bake for about 40 - 50 minutes.

* Once the cake is cooked leave to cool.

* Try to cut the basic shape out of the cake. You may find you need to add extra layers to get the shape you require.

* Once you are happy with the shape of the cake, mix a little jam with some water in a bowl. Using a pastry brush, coat the sponge with the jam. This helps the icing to stick to the sponge.

* Roll the icing out until it is big enough to cover the cake. The icing needs to be quite thick.

* Gently mould the icing over the cake and cut off the excess icing. Push the icing under at the edges of the cake so you have a nice neat finish.

* Using the edge of a spoon or a round edged knife, gently make indentations into the icing to create impression lines of the car. When you are happy with your outlines, go over them adding a bit more pressure.

* With the spare icing mould the wheel shapes and put them in place. You can add smaller details like wing mirrors, door handles etc if you wish, or just keep it simple.

* Use some spare icing to test your food colouring on. Once you have the correct colour paint the car.

* The number plate could be used to add a small message or the persons name.

* I hope they enjoy their unique cake!

This promotional film commissioned by wrought-iron chainmakers Noah Hingley and Sons (based in Netherton in the West Midlands) shows the labour-intensive work needed to make the heavy chains, hooks and anchors used in shipbuilding, and the equally arduous process of testing the end product's soundness and rigidity. Although made in 1939, it's a silent film, an indication of its low budget independent origins. You can read more about the film at http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/i...

The complete film, with music by Stephen Horne, is included on the new BFI DVD 'Tales from the Shipyard', featuring over five hours of documentary film revealing the history of British shipbuilding with many rare and little known titles: http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/...

'Selections from This Working Life: Tales from the Shipyard will be shown in cinemas at BFI Southbank, Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema, Glasgow Film Theatre and Belfast's Queen's Film Theatre, presenting newly restored feature films, non-fiction and television material - all captured by filmmakers across a century. EyesWrite and Boxing Clever
www.eyeswrite.org.uk

Over the years EyesWrite has been very successful in bringing new locally written plays to the stage and drawing in audiences to watch them. Although they produce at least one full length play every year by performing a number of short plays they are able to allow a greater number of writers to learn more about the art of writing, not only from the reaction of audiences but by listening to what the directors and actors have to say about their scripts.

This year selected local writers were invited to write a play based round a coffin, hence this event - Boxing Clever. Their brief was to write something that was easily staged, less than half an hour long and entertaining. Not all those asked were able to provide a play while others were able to produce more than one. In the end they received eight different plays of such quality that they decide to stage them all.

EyesWrite

A growing following of people are discovering the vast enjoyment of watching the new and unknown. There have always been those who will buy tickets to watch an Ayckbourn, a Priestley or a Shakespeare and providing the company putting them on has a good reputation known titles will always attract larger audiences. And so those who are willing to part with their hard earned cash to watch something they have never heard of can only be admired for their adventurous natures and thirst for a different kind experience.

By performing a selection of short plays EyesWrite is able to let numerous writers learn more about the art of writing, not only from the reaction of audiences but by listening to what the directors and actors have to say about their scripts. In this way skills are honed and developed allowing writers to improve the way they write.

EyesWrite does not have a membership as such and finding actors is not always easy. We have to seek help for all the other aspects of play production too, including lighting, sound, costume, props, sets and furniture and we are always eternally grateful to those volunteers who come to work with us.

We rarely have the energy or capacity to seek grants and so we are completely self sufficient. In essence our biggest source of income is the production of Gwyn Guy's murder mystery plays and what we make on these highly entertaining and social evenings allows us to put on yet more plays. EyesWrite will continue to provide outlets for new plays but had we regular financial assistance from a sponsor we would do so much more. However in these austere times sponsors are hard to find. Maybe one day?

This year instead of holding an annual festival of short plays, selected local writers were invited to write a play based round a coffin, hence this event Boxing Clever. Their brief was to write something that was easily staged, less than half an hour long and entertaining. Not all those asked were able to provide us with a play while others were able to produce more than one. In the end we received eight different plays of such quality that we decide to stage all of them. Thank you for supporting this event. Sit back and enjoy your afternoon or evening.

JOURNALISM 0 NAGGING LADIES 1

For once I am forsaking one of journalism's most important rules and not starting with an eye-catching opening paragraph – assuming I ever do!

So at the behest of the nagging ladies on the Social & Fund Raising Committee (I was outnumbered four to one at our meeting last week!) I draw your attention to the following:

·         You are invited to stay behind after this Saturday's match between the Men's 1sts and St Albans (2.15) to watch England play France at Twickenham (5.00). Sausages, baked potato and beans will be served during half time at the attractive price of £2.50.
·         Soundings are being taken regarding the format (disco or dinner etc) and date and venue (possibly Friday 6 May at the Apollo Club in Harleston) for the End of Season Party. Would team captains please seek the views of their team-mates and let Tracy Baker, Jackie Ridley, Philippa Taylor or Jose Tibbenham know their views as soon as possible.
·         Please come to the Fun Quiz Evening (with questions to suit all ages and brains!) to be held in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Saturday 12 March in teams of up to six people – at £2.50 per head.
·         During the evening the Spring Prize Raffle draw will be made so please sell your books and return with counterfoils and money if you have not already kindly done so.
·         The club is holding a Ball on Friday 6 July 2012 to mark the opening of the London Olympics – please put the date in your diary.
·         If you would like to book the marquee for any suitable function, e.g. wedding reception or birthday party, on either of the two succeeding days please contact Philippa Taylor (01379 852210).

And as for the hockey chat there is no doubt that last Saturday's best performance at a cold and wet Weybread was the Men's 3rds splendid 6-1 victory over Ipswich and East Suffolk. After an evenly contested opening few minutes Tiger Brice put Magpies ahead and thereafter there was no stopping the team with Tiger and Leigh Sitch commanding the mid-field assisted by some excellent work from skipper Matt Brand who added a second. Thereafter a hat-trick by the hard working Gavin Cole and the sixth scored near the end by Quentin Baynes ensured a vital win for the team as they seek to avoid (despite currently being in fourth place) the four relegation spots with some really tough matches looming.

Earlier the Ladies' 1sts all but ensured their national league survival with a fourth successive win by three goals to one over Cambridge City who have had a really miserable run of results. However, City scored first with a crisp shot from the edge of the circle before Sarah Brook was on hand two minutes later to tap in the equaliser. Second half goals by Frances Sumner and Artemis Clark gave the team victory summed up later by one of the players as 'We got there in the end' with the host of missed chances in mind. Meantime on the other pitch the Men's 4ths were going from 3-0 up to 6-4 down against Pelicans 2nds and the team now has a relegation fight on its hands while the Men's 6ths had an excellent 6-2 win away over Norwich City 5ths.

The sun usually shines on the Men's 7ths but in literal terms it didn't last Saturday although the temperature did rise by the odd degree as the rain eased - but not by enough to attract more than the three hardy spectators who could well have been discouraged by the absence for a second clean sheet week (!) by the absence of Peter Dolton. The eighth and final goal of the game and the 90th of the season for the still 100% team was, in a clubhouse discussion, credited to Tom 'Magic' Miller. With five matches left and the 100th goal on the horizon one can visualise it coming through a penalty stroke converted by inspirational skipper and 'keeper Murray Graham after denying the opportunity to PD!

While the Men's 1sts were picking up a vital and excellent point away on Sunday to Wimbledon (and only denied all three through a very late equaliser) with Andy Bedwell and Marc Lloyd making their national league debuts two weeks after Robbie Kinsella, Murray Graham was having his most testing game of the season as the Men's Veterans went down 3-2 away to Bishops Stortford in their EHB Cup clash. In a spirited match which saw two yellows (one apiece), the captains brought together by the umpires to cool passions and Stortford recover from 2-1 down at half time (after goals for Magpies by Martin Reader and Roger Kent) the visitors were harshly denied an equaliser by Jonathan Aldridge for third party obstruction in a crowded circle.  But well done to Simon Bardwell and his squad on their fine run in the competition.

With space limited I briefly comment that in addition to the Men's 1sts entertaining St Albans on Saturday (2.15) when a win would banish still possible relegation concerns the Men's 2nds host Pelicans at 12.15 (before playing Cambridge University 2nds (2.00) away on Sunday) and the Ladies' 1sts are away to table topping Ipswich on Sunday (2.00).  Good luck to all our teams in action this weekend including the Mixed team who are at home on Sunday to Brentwood (time to be confirmed) in the EHB Trophy.

Finally, congratulations to skipper Kristina Erith and the Ladies' 4ths who beat Yarmouth 2nds 1-0 away last Saturday to clinch the Martin & Acock Norfolk League Division 1 title.

Free masterclass helps Suffolk businesses get healthier
Healthy Ambitions Suffolk

Business leaders from across Suffolk have been invited to find out more about the benefits of keeping their workforce healthy at a free masterclass taking place next month.

Organised by Healthy Ambitions Suffolk in partnership with Business in the Community and Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, the event is specifically aimed at small and medium sized businesses looking to promote health and wellbeing among their employees.

Delegates will find out more about the financial benefits which keeping their workforce healthy can bring, such as increased productivity and reduced sickness absence. Businesses which have already introduced workplace health and wellbeing programmes will share their experiences, while information will also be provided about the help and support which is available locally.

Claire Parker, Healthy Ambitions Suffolk fit for work coordinator, said: “The masterclass will underline the importance of workplace wellbeing while also giving our local business community lots of practical, low cost ideas for improving health in their organisation.

“We’ll be focussing on providing the tools, information and inspiration which businesses need to take their first steps towards making employee wellbeing a strategic priority. Companies which come along will also have the chance to sign up for the HAS business award scheme, which will provide them with additional help and support.

“We are particularly keen to engage with small and medium sized businesses and would encourage anyone who wants to find out more to come along to the masterclass.”

The masterclass takes place on Wednesday 16 March at Ipswich Building Society, Freehold House, Ransomes Europark, running between 9.15am and 1pm. For more information or to book a place, contact Nifa Begum on 01638 663272 or nifa.begum@bitc.org.uk

Nature Notes - February 2011

The Snowdrop Galanthus nivalis and it’s other species are always greeted with delight as the cold dark winter slowly turns to springtime. The Snowdrop’s genus name comes from the the Greek Gala, milk and anthos a flower, alluding to the whiteness of the vernacular name for Snowdrop.

The Botanists and especially those who wish to add new species to their life lists, strive to search the churchyards and roadside verges for different types. Here in Waveney we have some wonderful churchyards holding a variety of snowdrop species. The Greater Snowdrop Galathus elwesii is frequent in a churchyard near Beccles along with Green Snowdrop G. Woronowii.

Despite Eileen and I searching other local churchyards, we have been unable to find any more of the rarer naturalised varieties.

This year the Snowdrops flowered by mid January and what better place to see great carpets is Sotterley Churchyard and the parkland there. Look out too for the yellow Winter Aconites Eranthis hymalis. They cover the open woodland floor by the great lake and mixed with the whites of the Snowdrops gladden the heart of any walker in the dull cold winter months just before spring.

Soon the flowers will be followed by the Coltsfoot Tussilago farfara. By far the best site in the area is Beccles Quay and river bank near the dinghy hut. The flowers appear before the leaves and if you are lucky you may see the small Andrena bees that pollinate the yellow flowers. Did you know most spring flowers are yellow to attract this early spring bee to their plants?

Five Ways to Wellbeing

Great Yarmouth is being urged to improve its mental wellbeing through an exciting new programme of workshops and activities being run through a partnership between Great Yarmouth & Waveney Mind, Seachange Arts and Community Wellbeing Company.

The workshops will introduce the Five Ways to Wellbeing concept, which outlines five simple actions that when practiced regularly can improve our mental wellbeing. These can be simple things such as being active, learning something new or doing something nice for a friend. Participants will also be given a Five Ways to Wellbeing diary to help them chart their own progress throughout the project.

Included in the programme is a series of Five Ways to Wellbeing Heritage Walks where participants will have the opportunity to create an arts project based on observations and what interested them on the walk. This might include film making, photography, music, dance, theatre or creative writing with participants being encouraged to showcase their work.

‘The Five Ways to Wellbeing programme is open to everyone’ explained Corrina Giles of Seachange Arts ‘It’s a great way to meet people; it encourages you to try something new and we hope people can see the benefits and progress they are making as a result of the Five Ways to Wellbeing activities.’

The project participants are also encouraged to volunteer in their communities, with the opportunity to volunteer at Great Yarmouth’s Mardi Gras which will take place on Tuesday 8th March. The event is set to celebrate the international festival that is Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day and bring the town’s King Street alive with food, music, performance, international customs and pancake themed activities.

To volunteer at Mardi Gras or to take part in the Five Ways to Wellbeing programme or for further information, please contact Corrina by email corrinaatseachangearts@googlemail.com or call 01493 846550

The King Street Mardi Gras takes place on Tuesday 8th March from 4-6pm. The event will feature entertainment, food and customs with an international theme, both in the street and inside the event’s tented area on King Street.

Award winning team celebrate
Eating Disorders Awareness Week

Suffolk’s award winning eating disorders team are celebrating Eating Disorders Awareness Week, a national event coordinated by leading charity b-eat.

The annual event commences 21 February 2011, and continues B-eat’s 22 year vision that “eating disorders will be beaten”.

The Suffolk community eating disorders team, part of Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, were awarded the b-eat quality assurance mark in summer 2010.

Gill Burgoyne, service line manager for Suffolk’s community eating disorders team, said: “The Trust has been supporting b-eat as a charity since they were first founded, and we have worked closely with them since our eating disorders service was launched in 2003”.

When awarding the assurance mark to the Suffolk team, b-eat highlighted the excellent personalised service, which includes partnership working and service user involvement, and that promotes sustained recovery.

Gill added: “Suffolk’s service is provided to those aged 18 years and above who suffer from anorexia or bulimia nervosa. It is important to note that eating disorders do not discriminate. We treat both men and women from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.”

A range of treatments is provided by the team including psychiatry, specialist dieticians, psychological therapy, physiotherapy, and specialist nurses in the community and as outpatients at the team offices in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.

Gill also discussed the issue of body confidence and its importance: “Over the past few years television shows such as How to Look Good Naked have been raising awareness of positive body image.

“People are constantly surrounded with unrealistic and unattainable images telling people what they ‘should’ look like. Although images in the media are not a direct cause of eating disorders, these images affect people’s body confidence.

“Improving body confidence and self esteem can act as a protective factor against the development of eating disorders. It is imperative to improve the understanding of eating disorders through public health awareness, informed training and easier access to specialist service.

“Eating Disorders Awareness Week is great opportunity to remind people that to love the body you’re in!”

Bungay Battle in the 2011 Eastern Interclub Tournament!

The Eastern Area Inter-Club tournament took place in Northampton this year and Bungay battled to a brilliant medal tally and a creditable 3rd place in the region, even with a diminished collection of competitors due to injuries and prior commitments.

21 medals in total were achieved by 16 fighters in all age groups, the junior (13-17) and pee wees (under 12) all performed well and they won a host of medals including gold for Reece Jordan (aged 12) in the sparring and silver in the patterns.

Gold for Callum Read (aged 12) in the Pee Wee patterns whilst Ben Jordan (aged 7) won silver in the younger age range patterns.

Kal Bedingfield (aged 14) won a great gold for patterns and silver for sparring.

Oli Baylis (aged 16) won bronze for sparring and silver for patterns and his sister Saskia (aged 15) won silver for sparring and bronze for patterns.

Sophie Akerman (aged 14) won a brilliant gold for patterns but her sister Jenna only just missed out on bronze by the narrowest of margins.

Denys Wooley (aged 14) fought hard for his bronze in sparring and Aaron Sampson (aged 16) put in a brave performance but lost to a much higher grade student.

Adam Sloan (aged 13) also gained a 4th placing in the junior black belt patterns.

Less adults from the club were able to participate this weekend but those that did achieved great results with Nidge Bedingfield (aged 56) winning gold for sparring and patterns whilst his wife, Suzie (aged 50) won double silver medals.

Club assistant instructor Martin Sloan (41) won bronze for black belt sparring and instructors assistant Nicole Somerville (19) won double bronze in the black belt sparring and patterns.

Finally Clinton Gillett the club instructor won silver for patterns and gold for sparring to draw procedures to a close.

Steve King The area 5th degree and senior said “Bungay did especially well and came 3rd with a small group of competitors, just think what would happen if they could have brought a full squad!”

The club is recruiting for new students at the moment so if you want to get fit for the new year come along to the high school on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7pm or contact Clinton Gillett on 01986 892140 for further details. The youngest students in the club are 6 years old and there is no upper age limit.
