An Evening of Fine Music
Janet Seidel Trio
Orford Jazz
17th March 2012
Janet Seidel “Australia’s first lady of jazz singing” will be appearing at a jazz evening in a wonderful 12th century Suffolk Church in the village of Orford.
The church has an incredible acoustic and a fine concert grand piano made by Broadwood and Sons, an English piano manufacturer founded in 1728, St. Bartholomew’s Church has a long history of outstanding musical events including the World Premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Noyes Fludde and is regularly used for choral and orchestral concerts and recordings.
Aldeburgh Music Club Choir and the Prometheus Orchestra join forces on the previous Saturday with the World Premiere performances of two works sharing themes of the sea and the Suffolk coast but this is the first jazz evening and it promises to be an outstanding event.

Despite the fact that our raptor hospital was undergoing a complete reconstruction and refurbishment in 2011, the job of looking after and rehabilitating wild birds of prey continued none-the-less.
Of the birds that were brought in to us last year we were able to rehabilitate around 47%, which is a very good percentage. Of those that couldn’t be rehabilitated most were humanely put to sleep by our supporting vets at the Stowe Veterinary Group to prevent any unnecessary suffering.
Overall, fewer birds were actually brought in to us here at the Sanctuary than in 2010 and, for a number of reasons, that would seem to be a good sign. First of all, the increase in grass margins probably means that, essentially, fewer birds are hunting on the roadside and so are avoiding being hit by passing vehicles. Having said that, the biggest cause of injury to our birds of prey in this country is still RTA’s, which this year accounted for the damage to approximately 71% of the birds brought in to the Sanctuary.

Though the number of injured birds we treated in 2011 was down on the previous year, this rather battered & bruised little owl was one of our visitors until he was successfully released again after treatment and R&R
Also, it would also seem that the message to leave foundling chicks where they are, rather than picking them up and moving them or bringing them in to us, has reached a wider audience. We had very few brought in to us last year, which is a pleasingly small result , though of course there are bound to be some genuine reasons why chicks might need care and attention.
Species wise, the hospital saw a greater intake of Tawny Owls than any other and, of those, the majority were the victims of RTA’s. Of the balance, some had got themselves into awkward predicaments - one of the Tawnies was actually found in a kitchen and another was wedged in a tree, but thankfully they aren’t situations that occur very often. The hospital also had a fairly even intake of other species, including Little Owls, Barn Owls, Kestrels and Sparrowhawks and, more rarely, one Marsh Harrier and a Sparrowhawk that was found in a chicken coup!

Heard but not seen - when we released this Tawny back to the wild, by flying straight to a perch in the trees he demonstrated how successful the natural camouflage of his plumage is in making him almost invisible in his natural habitat!
There are, unfortunately, all sorts of hazards out there for our wild birds of prey and Sparrowhawks in particular tend to be quite fond of bashing into windows. Usually this just results in a rather stunned bird, but it’s worthwhile making sure that big windows have stickers or curtains to alert birds that they can’t fly through them!
What with predators, wires to get tangled in and the possibility of starvation if you are a young or in any way incapacitated raptor, it’s not any easy life out there, but we like to think at the Sanctuary that we help to make life that bit easier for our native birds of prey and it’s good to be able to report on another successful year of rehabilitation and release for 2011.
Thank you for your support in enabling us to do so.

Callishibori
Callishibori has made the specialist art of indigo dyeing and shibori accessible and achievable both to the beginner and the more experienced textile practitioner.
Not until Callishibori have indigo, the necessary reducing agent, fabric prepared with a design, and stitch formats been brought together, with thorough instruction. They are presented as informative starter packs and project packs.
For the beginner, the starter packs make that first step into the world of indigo shaped resist dyeing, 'shibori', much less daunting, and provide a solid foundation upon which to build skill and knowledge. The more experienced textile practionioner can benefit from a tailor made service, as ingredients can be supplied for their specified vat size.
With stitch instruction, templates and the ever poplular 'Seriously Strong Thread' you will be able to design your own patterns, and produce unique indigo shibori fabrics which are ideal for patchwork and quilting, embroidery, art textiles, fashion and many other textile disiplines. They can, of course be enjoyed as indigo fabrics in their own right!
Callishibori came about by listening to students. Now almost everything that is needed to start an indigo shibori project is just there, conveniently packaged, with easy to follow instructions and generous information.
Indigo
The story of indigo is amazing! Known to man in ancient times and harvested from plants flourishing in hot climates, it became the world’s most important dyestuff by the end of the 17th century. The invention in 1856 of the first coal tar dyestuff heralded the manufacture of synthetic indigo some years later.
ShiboriWith shibori resists, (and shibori relief), one is immediately engaged with the fabric, organising it, then securing it, often into odd shapes and distorted 3D forms, before it is dyed. It is the essence of fabric manipulation - quite different from other textile colouring methods in which cloth is kept flat and open to receive dye.
Callishibori enables you to create shibori and enjoy the magic of indigo through indigo dye packs, stitch packs, shibori stencils and much more. Products are available through mail order, at shows and exhibitions.
"My educational programme includes masterclasses, workshops and summer schools. Power Point presentations.
'Kaleidoscope' is currently on display in a major touring exhibition on indigo. 'Indigo, a blue to dye for' runs until early January at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery."

The wildlife charity the RSPB is appealing to the public to take part in its annual
Big Garden Birdwatch 2012
With well over half a million people submitting their results in 2010, this is one of the the world's largest wildlife surveys.
It could reveal, says the RSPB, what effect a year of "confusing weather" has had on our garden birds.
The event will take place on 28 and 29 January 2012.

Lowestoft's Marina Theatre has announced that the phenomenally successful West End production DREAMBOATS AND PETTICOATS, the smash hit musical inspired by the million selling albums, which comes to the Marina for just one week from February 20th 2012 has already smashed box office records with the Suffolk venue inundated with calls.
The dazzling success of the first three albums in the 'Dreamboats and Petticoats' series sent the message loud and clear. With over 2 millions copies sold and several weeks at the Number One spot in the compilation charts, the Great British public were saying that they didn't just want to listen to pure nostalgia: they'd love to see it as well. Thus 'Dreamboats' was born as a musical, opening at The Churchill Theatre in Bromley in February 2009 to rave critical reviews and widespread audience acclaim. Over a million people have since been enchanted by an evening of pure hedonistic affection for a more innocent era, when love was young and so was rock 'n' roll.
Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, the team behind Goodnight Sweetheart, Birds of a Feather, The New Statesmen and Shine On Harvey Moon, this spectacular feel-good production, which will play at the Marina for just one week from February 20, promises 'the greatest time of your life' - taking you back to a time when each passing week brought another classic track.
Featuring songs from Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury, Chuck Berry and many more, including Let's Dance, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Shaking All Over, Bobby's Girl, Little Town Flirt, Only Sixteen, Sleepwalk, Runaround Sue, Happy Birthday Sweet 16, What A Wonderful World, Let's Twist Again, Let It Be Me and many more hits from music's golden era!
Dreamboats will be the first full scale musical to play at the Marina in over a year and follows the popular venues transition into a charitable trust last December.
People wishing to obtain remaining tickets to see Dreamboats & Petticoats are advised to call the theatre Box Office on 01502 533200.
