Waveney Nightsafe community projects

Waveney Nightsafe

Waveney consists of five main towns; Lowestoft, Beccles, Bungay, Southwold and Halesworth. All of these towns offer a varied nightlife to all those who live, work and visit the area.

Waveney is currently one of the safest districts in England with some of the lowest recorded crime rates in the Country. However, alcohol related violence remains a top Police priority not only because of it's effect on the local community but also because through better education incidences of violence, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage can be reduced, making the area an even nicer place to live, work and visit.

The Waveney Nightsafe Partnership is made up of a proactive group of dedicated people who wish to see their local community thrive, whilst endorsing safety messages so everyone can enjoy the area they spend time in. As such Suffolk Constabulary works in partnership with those on the ground to include Pub, Club and Restaurant owners, Resident Associations and Taxis firms amongst others.

The pages on the Nightsafe website are all designed to help you enjoy your night out whilst remembering to stay safe. All we ask, in the very least, is that you remember at all times the three Nightsafe key phrases;

Don't Over Do It

Friends Stick Together

Get Home Safe

Record your Demo CD - offer, Planet Studios, Bungay

"Record your Demo CD" offer

We offer a great and inexpensive way for young bands in East Anglia to professionally cut their first demo, guided by experienced engineers and musicians. We will multi-track record your bands drum, lead and bass guitar parts "Live" at our local venue in Bungay and complete the vocal recording afterwards at Planet Studios.

Our compact 24 bit digital multitrack recording process utilizes fire wire mixing desks and powerful intel Apple Mac computers with proven quality recording live events, including the acclaimed 'Code Indigo In Concert' double album released in 2007 - check out

www.codeindigo.co.uk/In-Concert.php

and also listen to the demos cut by our most recent customer, local band "Rooting Deep", which can be heard by clicking MP3 links below:

Rooting Deep Demo 1 -
Rooting Deep Demo 2 -
Rooting Deep Demo 3 -

The Planet team of David Wright and

Nigel Turner-Heffer are experienced engineers, composers, musicians and live performers.

They're members of Code Indigo and have a huge catalogue of TV, library and solo recordings.

Our basic package works like this:

2 x 10 hour days.

Day One consists of 5 hours live multitrack recording at an appropriate local venue in Bungay (arranged by us) followed by a further session in the studio where the backing tracks are edited, arranged and mixed.

Day Two consists of recording vocals for the three demo tracks, editing the backing tracks as required and then mix down and mastering of the completed tracks to CDr (we will provide 5 CDr copies).

Our aim is to provide a professional service in a relaxed and enjoyable, educational recording environment. We want our customers to leave the studio with 3 "High Quality" demo tracks, so our emphasis is on "Quality", not rushed quantity. As professional recording musicians ourselves, we want all product that leaves Planet Studio to represent the high professional standards associated with our collective and individual names.

****************************

Further information:
With careful set up to ensure the best quality recording, in our experience it's possible to record 3 to 4 takes of 3 songs, sometimes more at the live multi-track session, and we're happy to record as many as we can in the allotted time, so long as we have good takes of the 3 main demo tracks. Our main objective here is to professionally record the drums and guitars to get a natural, relaxed live feel from the band. Guide vocals are used but the vocals proper are recorded later back at the studio.

Bands can sometimes record 5 or 6 songs in the live setting, but realistically they can only record the vocals properly for up to 3 songs in the studio before the final mix and mastering. The beauty of our process is that young bands can play their music live in a relaxed and familiar way which should reflect in their music. The backing tracks can then be mixed and mastered using sophisticated studio equipment while retaining that "live" energy, and then vocals are added and processed as required in a studio environment to complete a high quality, professional demo.

Band members don't have to worry about playing individually in isolation to click tracks in a studio booth, which can be a difficult and costly process for young musicians. Our method is a much more relaxed and intuitive method of demo recording. It's also educational because the musicians can have involvement with the various stages of the recording and studio process with experienced personnel. This may give many young musicians their very first insight into professional recording techniques.

****************************

The all inclusive cost for this 2 day, 3 song demo package is £395.00 (three hundred and ninety five pounds) and assumes a 3 or 4 piece band comprising drums, guitars and vocalist.

We can also provide a 3 day 5/6 song demo package at £545.00 (five hundred and forty five pounds), again assuming a 3 or 4 piece band comprising drums, guitars and vocalist.

However, we can cater for bands of any size or persuasion and will happily discuss you particular band's requirements.

So if you would like your demo professionally recorded by a team of friendly, professional musicians and engineers who care passionately about the music they record, then please give David a call anytime on 01986894712 (or 07790445757) to book your demo.

NHS Constitution, have your say!

NHS Constitution
have your say in Great Yarmouth and Waveney

Health Service leaders in Great Yarmouth and Waveney today united in urging members of the public to have their say on the proposed NHS Constitution.

Published earlier this summer as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the National Health Service, it sets out for the first time the rights and responsibilities linked to entitlement to NHS care.

A constitution will effectively be a bill of rights for patients and is seen as a major reform - comparable to Gordon Brown giving the Bank of England control of interest rates when he was Chancellor.

Bernard Williamson

Bernard Williamson, Chairman of Great Yarmouth and Waveney Primary Care Trust (PCT), and John Hemming, Chairman of James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, today urged as many people as possible to respond to the national consultation.

Mr Williamson said: “The NHS Constitution is about safeguarding the core principles and values of the Health Service for the next generation while setting a clear direction for the future. “It reaffirms rights to NHS services, free of charge and with equal access for all, and it enshrines patient rights to choice and to NICE-approved drugs recommended by clinicians.

“It aims to empower both staff and patients, and has been developed from the bottom up, with the active engagement of staff, patients and the public.

“The NHS is the property of the people which is why I want to see many residents of the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area taking part in this important consultation.”

He added that there would be a presentation about the NHS Constitution at the PCT’s annual general meeting which is open to the public. It will be held at the PCT’s headquarters in Common Lane North, Beccles, on Tuesday 30 September, beginning at 5.30pm.

John Hemming

John Hemming, Chairman of the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The proposed NHS Constituion safeguards the future of the NHS and includes a clear explanation of your rights.

“The NHS belongs to us all. The Constitution is designed to reflect what matters, whether you are a patient or a member of staff. We welcome your views.”

The Constitution will be presented prior to a public meeting of the Governors Council in the Celebration Suite, Burrage Centre, James Paget University Hospital, on Friday 3 October, beginning at 9.30am. Trust members and any member of the public are welcome to attend to give their views.

The consultation on the contents of the Constitution and how to put it into practice began on 30 June and ends on 17 October.

Beccles Station Walk - National Express

Beccles Station Walk
by Michael Anderton

The East Suffolk Railway connected Beccles with Ipswich and opened in 1859, incorporating parts of the earlier Halesworth, Beccles and Haddiscoe, and the Lowestoft and Beccles Railways. The Waveney Valley Railway from Tivetshall on the Ipswich to Norwich mainline reached Beccles in 1863 making the town an important junction on the expanding network. However, by 1966 the Waveney Valley Railway had closed, together with the line to Haddiscoe north across the River Waveney because it had become too expensive to maintain.

Beccles Marsh was given to the people of the town in 1584 by Queen Elizabeth I by granting a charter, now depicted on the Town Sign to commemorate the event. The Town Council, Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the Broads Authority maintain the marsh as a haven for wildlife and have provided waymarked trails of up to 4 miles and this walk incorporates a route all the way around the marsh, although various alternatives are available if preferred.
Walk Route
Martyrs Memorial Church in Beccles

From the station walk straight into the town centre along Station Road, Beccles past interesting Victorian houses and the Martyrs Memorial Church where a plaque on the front describes the burning of three men on 21st May 1556 for their beliefs. Continue on across Newgate Street and along Market Street to reach New Market. This area was developed in the 13th century by the Abbot of Bury to cater for growing trade, the quaint little shops stand on the sites of the original 17th century wooden stalls. Turn right along The Walk past the red brick octagonal shaped Town Hall, built in 1765 and standing on the site of the original medieval Market Cross. Continue on to the Tower of St. Michael's Church, housing a peal of 10 bells and built separately away from the dangerous cliff at the rear of the church. A guide book describing the church is well worth obtaining if you are entering and is available within for £1.50.

Salt Gate Beccles, end of the Old Market Place

Continue straight on down Salt Gate and past the end of the Old Market Place, probably the original Anglo Saxon site of Fairs and Markets. Walk along Northgate noting several plaques on the walls describing various buildings, including the house of Adrian Bell, writer and father of Martin Bell the former war correspondent. Also note the Scores, access lanes to the staithes or quays on the river where goods of all kinds were loaded and unloaded. Cross Bridge Street and walk on along Fen Lane to reach The Quay. Information about the history of the town, river and the surrounding area is available at the Broads Authority Information Centre to the left. Bear right and cross the water of the yacht station via the footbridge, turning left along the quayside path on the other side. At the end of the Tarmac path turn right along the bank of the River Waveney and under the bridge carrying the A146 Beccles by-pass. Just before passing under the bridge there is a map on the fencing showing a plan of the marshes and the routes of the trails.

Walk on past Beccles Sailing Club where there is a junction of the paths and the point where the red walk turns right off the main walk. Continue along the riverside, now on a grassy path on the bank, following the path for some considerable way until you reach another path junction giving access again to the red walk.

Beccles riverside embankment

The main walk continues straight on along the riverside embankment. This section of path is also part of the Angles Way, a 77 mile path from Great Yarmouth to Knettishall Heath Country Park following the valleys of the River Waveney and Little Ouse. The next feature you will come across is the pumping station, used to regulate the water level in the dykes of the fen and, a little further on, the site of the old swing bridge that once carried the railway over the river. The railway from Beccles to Great Yarmouth was built across the fen and river in 1854 but proved to be expensive to maintain and was eventually closed in the 1960s, the bed of the track across the marsh is now used for access.

Beccles riverside marking the eastern boundary of the marsh

The riverside path eventually reaches a yellow topped waymark post at the end of the maintained trail at a right turn down the embankment away from the river. Follow the path as it meanders through the fen and between the trees, following the Worlingham Wall marking the eastern boundary of the marsh separating the Beccles level from Worlingham.

Follow the path at a right turn over a footbridge and then straight on to the right of a dyke, along a willow tree lined track. At the end of a long straight and a junction of tracks turn left and then follow round to the right at the next junction, heading for the farm buildings ahead. At the farm, at a junction of the tracks, turn left past the cattle pens, now walking on the former bed of the old marsh railway through the trees.

Beccles farm buildings

After passing through a gateway at the pits there is another board with information about the marsh and the trails. Turn right under the height barrier on the grassy track to reach another gate with a stile at the side and leading out to a small car parking area. Walk along the waste site access road and turn right past the allotments to the next bend where the track turns sharply right. There is another Marsh Trail information board here close to the bend.

Turn left on the path alongside the fence and up a few steps to the main A146 road. Cross with care and walk down the steps at the other side past the Fen Lane car park to reach Fen Lane. Turn left and follow Pound Road round the bend to reach the red brick Pound at the junction with Common Lane North. This circular structure was once used to contain stray animals found on the Common and was restored in 1982 by the Town Council and the Beccles Society.

Walk along Common Lane North and right along George Westwood Way to return to the start of the walk at Beccles Station.
