Indigo & Shibori from Callishibori, Wortwell, Harleston

enabling you to create shibori,
and experience the magic of indigo

Callishibori
Callishibori has made the specialist art of indigo dyeing and shibori accessible and achievable both to the beginner and the more experienced textile practitioner.

Not until Callishibori have indigo, the necessary reducing agent, fabric prepared with a design, and stitch formats been brought together, with thorough instruction. They are presented as informative starter packs and project packs.

For the beginner, the starter packs make that first step into the world of indigo shaped resist dyeing, 'shibori', much less daunting, and provide a solid foundation upon which to build skill and knowledge. The more experienced textile practionioner can benefit from a tailor made service, as ingredients can be supplied for their specified vat size.

With stitch instruction, templates and the ever poplular 'Seriously Strong Thread' you will be able to design your own patterns, and produce unique indigo shibori fabrics which are ideal for patchwork and quilting, embroidery, art textiles, fashion and many other textile disiplines. They can, of course be enjoyed as indigo fabrics in their own right!

Callishibori came about by listening to students. Now almost everything that is needed to start an indigo shibori project is just there, conveniently packaged, with easy to follow instructions and generous information.

Indigo
The story of indigo is amazing! Known to man in ancient times and harvested from plants flourishing in hot climates, it became the world’s most important dyestuff by the end of the 17th century. The invention in 1856 of the first coal tar dyestuff heralded the manufacture of synthetic indigo some years later.

Shibori
With shibori resists, (and shibori relief), one is immediately engaged with the fabric, organising it, then securing it, often into odd shapes and distorted 3D forms, before it is dyed. It is the essence of fabric manipulation - quite different from other textile colouring methods in which cloth is kept flat and open to receive dye.

Callishibori enables you to create shibori and enjoy the magic of indigo through indigo dye packs, stitch packs, shibori stencils and much more. Products are available through mail order, at shows and exhibitions.

"My educational programme includes masterclasses, workshops and summer schools. Power Point presentations.

'Kaleidoscope' is currently on display in a major touring exhibition on indigo. 'Indigo, a blue to dye for' runs until early January at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery."

North Suffolk Skills Centre, Halesworth

North Suffolk Skills Centre, Halesworth

If double maths on a wet Thursday afternoon fills you with dread, then the trial of a new qualification in the north of the county may be of interest.

Around 30 high school pupils from the Halesworth area get to leave the classroom every week to develop new skills on their way to an Engineering Diploma.

The range of subjects on offer includes car mechanics, engineering, brick laying, plastering, hairdressing and catering.

The venue for the training is the new £2 million state-of-the-art North Suffolk Skills Centre in Halesworth.

The centre is helping to address the needs of students who prefer to study more practical subjects as opposed to the traditional three Rs.

'Ground breaking' scheme
Graham Lane, who chaired the development panel for the Engineering Diploma, had a tour of the centre and spoke to staff and students to learn more about its role in piloting the brand new Diploma in Engineering course.

Mr Lane described the educational work being carried out at the Skills Centre as 'ground-breaking and inspirational'.

"All the evidence shows this is going to be a mainstream qualification. Already Cambridge University says it's prepared to take the diploma as entry for an honours degree course.

"I think the diploma is the most exciting reform in this country since secondary education began in 1902. The children clearly enjoy their studies at centres like these and I think one of the main issues could be the future demand for places which at the moment are limited."

Based in the grounds of Halesworth Middle School, the multi-million pound centre sees Lowestoft College, Leiston, Bungay and Sir John Leman high schools working together to provide a range of training opportunities.

It was this successful partnership that meant the centre was specially selected by the government as one of only a few in England to stage the new courses.

UEA and Cefas form alliance to research marine environment issues

The pressures of global climate change on the world’s fragile marine environments is to form the central plank of a new strategic alliance between the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich and Lowestoft’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas).

The venture will strengthen existing collaboration between the institutions and establish new areas of joint research whose overall aim is to produce high-quality science that will influence policy-making, economic development and, ultimately, an improved quality of life.

The partnership will include a new joint UEA-Cefas lectureship in marine ecosystem services – the services provided by the natural environment that benefit people with the new lecturer to be appointed in time to start in the autumn. It is also hoped that the two organisations will work together to develop a new degree course in marine environmental management.

Together, UEA and Cefas have helped reduce ‘discards’ (non-targeted commercial fish caught but thrown back dead) by two-thirds in trials on modified fishing gear. They have found that more than half the coral reef fisheries in island communities around the world are being exploited unsustainably.

The partners also collaborate on coastal erosion and managed re-alignment of the coast; the impact of climate change on fish growth and stocks; and nutrient supply from rivers and sediment storage in estuaries.

PE and Sport Consultation
A survey has been launched this week asking every pupil in Norfolk how much sport and activity they do outside of school hours. The consultation also asks young people how much competitive sport they do. The purpose of this is to inform plans to deliver the 5 Hour Offer – a government initiative to ensure children have access to at least 5 hours of sport per week. The survey is important to find out what activities children already do and what they would like to do in the future. The results will help shape the future of PE and sport in Norfolk.

Few women are doing enough exercise

active norfolk
Few women are doing enough exercise

Only a fifth of women in the UK are doing enough exercise to be healthy, a report has found. The Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation wants a public debate on how to engage women in physical activity.

It says many women currently feel under more pressure to be thin than healthy and are put off exercise from an early age - typically by school sport. And women desperately need greater sporting role models than the wives and girlfriends of football stars, it says.

The research finds:
• 90% of women feel under pressure to be thin
• almost half of 25-34 year old women feel under greater pressure to be thin than healthy
• 25% of women saying they ‘hate the way they look’ when they exercise or play sport
• nearly a quarter of women say that PE at school put them off sport
• 40% of girls as young as seven don’t want to be seen to be “sporty”

"There is a fundamental mismatch between girls' views of their bodies' functions as passive and decorative, and the use of the body as active and functional in sport," the report says.

"Many girls also dislike the practical requirement of having to alter their dress and appearance in a way that conflicts with their images of femininity in order to take part in PE."

"We need the media to pay greater attention to female sporting achievements. Why, when Nicole Cooke won the French cycling tour on the same day as Andy Murray hurt his wrist, did she become an afterthought on the news?"

The WSFF believes that cultural representations of women have to change if women are to show a greater interest in fitness than thinness. It hopes to kickstart a debate involving the media, government, schools and universities, and also plans to encourage businesses to facilitate more sporting events at work.

It wants to make sport more accessible to women with children by encouraging the provision of crèches at leisure centres and more options to exercise as a family.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is opening the WSFF conference on Thursday, has said his government is committed "to achieving a step change in how women and girls experience and participate in sport".

"The most significant barrier to women being active today is not a practical barrier it's a cultural one. We need to tackle this head on."

Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes said: "We need to find out ways to encourage girls to do exercise with their friends, to go to the gym, go out for walks, go on bike rides - things that you can find that are fun."
