Norfolk Reed Fencing, friendly to the environmentally

Norfolk Reed is the most durable material for thatching; a roof well thatched with it will last a lifetime.

What is not so well known is
that good-looking and long-lasting fencing has traditionally been made by hand in East Anglia using Norfolk Reed.

Bill Bear, who runs Norfolk Reed Fencing, trained as a textile designer but made a fence for his own garden in 1992, and was asked by several people to make some for their gardens too, and so it carried on.

Norfolk Reed is environmentally friendly. Not only do regularly cut reedbeds provide valuable habitats for numerous birds and mammals, but both reed and timber are from sustainable sources.

Norfolk Reed Fencing is good-looking as well as practical. The timber frame is robust without being clumsy and the colour matches that of the reed. Timber and reed will mellow to make a wonderful backdrop for garden plants and an effective screen to hide unsightly tanks or dustbins.

Since the panels are identical on both sides, there is no 'good' or 'bad' side.

Unlike a solid fence, Norfolk Reed Fencing makes an efficient windbreak; withstanding strong wind by allowing a proportion to pass through.

All the timber used is pressure-treated and will therefore need no further attention. The reed needs no further treatment. The life expectancy of reed panels varies from 10-25 years.

Norfolk Reed Fencing is simple to erect. Use galvanised screws or nails to fix the panels directly to posts through the edging battens.

There are two types of panel; framed and open panels. Both have a substantial gravelboard at the bottom to keep reed clear of the ground. The reed is firmly sandwiched between treated timber battens. The reed in open panels is trimmed with either a straight top or wavy top. Framed panels have a chamfered timber capping to shed rainwater and protect the reed.

The panels are available in a range of sizes from stock, or as special sizes or types to order. Sloping panels, gates and panels incorporating trellis can all be made.

NGS “RIG A JIG JIG” Garden Party, East Ruston Old Vicarage

“RIG A JIG JIG”
Garden Party at East Ruston Old Vicarage

The National Gardens Scheme in Norfolk are celebrating the end of the “Open Garden” 2007 season with a NGS “Rig a jig jig ” garden party at East Ruston Old Vicarage on the 6th October 2007 by kind permission of Alan Gray and Graham Robeson.

This is an opportunity for the Norfolk NGS to invite the private garden owners, commercial gardens and nurseries who open their garden gates and thank them for contributing to such a worthwhile cause.

Alan Gray, Ambassador for the National Gardens Scheme in Norfolk said “Few people realise that the NGS support national nursing caring and gardening charities with a proportion of some openings going to other charities nominated by the garden owner.”

Major beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie cancer care, The Queen's Nursing Institute, Perennial – Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society, The Royal Fund for Gardeners' Children, National Trust - NGS garden careerships, Crossroads – caring for carers, Help the Hospices and County Nursing Associations.

This event will help raise the profile of the NGS in Norfolk and its great horticultural product. Group and tour organisers along with the garden owners are invited to attend a VIP reception to mark the occasion.

It is a fantastic way to end the eightieth birthday celebrations of the National Garden Scheme in Norfolk and plan 2008 garden days out!

The East Ruston Old Vicarage garden gates open to the public at two o’clock until five thirty, admission £5.00

Enjoy a traditional garden party with folk and country music by the Rig a jig jig band. Let the children, grandchildren, or yourselves, listen to the story telling provided by the new woodland theme park BeWILDerwood to make a fantastic family day out.

Light refreshments, plant sales and handy garden tips are all available.

Visit www.norfolkgardens.org to order a leaflet, or visit your local tourist information centre. For more information about opening your garden in Norfolk for the NGS contact County Organiser, Fiona Black on 01692 650247
