Saturday 7th June see the second of this years Later with Jools Holland based and inspired music event music The Room and this month there is quite a line-up of live music with six acts taking to the four stages, giving a totally eclectic mix of styles, for those who have not yet visited The Room it is as it says based on the BBC TV series Later with Jools Holland and comprises found stages, with three sets of music, each set featuring all six acts appearing on the evening by skipping from one stage to another. The night features mainly original music as well as offering a covers giving variety for all.

Offering the covers on stage one will be the impressive The Blind Lemon Soul Band, described as the band “To Much Soul To Control” featuring a 9 to 10 piece line up, bringing the spirit of Atlantic Soul and Roadhouse Blues to The Room, the bands members based in and around Lowestoft and formed around seventeen years ago but have lost none of their enthusiasm, they recently played at Corton Hut and brought the house down with covers of classic by Otis Reading, James Brown, Etta James and Delbert McClinton, the band will be playing a selection of tracks through the night as well as finishing the live music with a selection of floor fillers.

Stage two sees two of the finest musicians and entertainers in the area John Ward and Mario Price, both have graced the stages of some of the best venues and festivals both locally, nationally and internationally. John a naturally gifted singer songwriter who has been performing live music since the early 1980’s, has release four critically acclaimed albums, his most recent “Praying For The Aliens” only being launched a matter of weeks age. Mario Price violinist extraordinaire brings his exceptional improvisation talents and his exciting celtic/gypsy/jazz to the stage to compliment John.

Stage three in total contrast features Burn The Headlines, recently formed with only a few gigs under their belt, their opening gig being in early May at Norwich’s Queen Charlotte rock venue and that is what these guys do, a five piece describing themselves as an Emo Metal Band their explosive guitar based songs will certainly liven up the evenings proceedings, the band features Danny Porter ex Lazy Poker Blues Guitarist, Will Gatley guitar/vocals, Sam Currier bass, Jason Westgate drums and Kev Mileham vocals, all are local lads so come give them your support.

Acoustic stage four features no less than three acts, duo “Yum Yum” are Lisa and Jo who appeared at last year’s Room, their almost silent and gentle songs will grip you then blow you away with Lisa’s haunting and powerful voice, The NJP Jazz Trio featuring guitarist Peter Pease brings the sound of Django Rheinhardt’s gypsy jazz to the evening, along with a rhythm guitarist and saxophonist making up the trio, returning from last year for another rare appearance will be Jason Parr and Red, former members of local band Blues At Ten, neither of them perform on a wide scale nowadays so we are somewhat privileged to have them perform for a second year, Jason an accomplished slide guitarist and piano player, Red a gravelly voiced blues singer are allegedly conjuring up a musical delight for us, best not to be missed.

Gorleston elderly use canes for self-defence

Local elderly taught how to use canes for self-defence

A martial arts expert has set up special walking stick self-defence classes for pensioners.

Kevin Garwood, 58, of Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth, is showing them how to use their walking sticks to be more confident.

And his lessons have already paid off after an old woman fought off two muggers, reports the Daily Mail.

Mr Garwood currently teaches three walking stick self-defence classes a week and aims to start more sessions this year.

He said: "What I am not trying to do is make grey-haired ninjas or have people twitching and always looking over their shoulders. What it does is give them tremendous confidence."

Classes begin with a warm-up, focusing on gentle movements of the hands, wrists, arms and bodies and going on to turning and twirling the stick.

Pupils practice sets of movements and learn simple strangleholds, arm locks and throws, using their walking sticks.

"We don't teach lots of complicated techniques. It's basic stuff, stuff you can remember," said Kevin.

And there have been definite successes including an elderly woman in Yarmouth who fought off two yobs who grabbed her arm and her handbag.

"She went to the police station because she was worried about having hurt the boys," said Kevin.

Coming Saturday 17th November

New Years Eve Party
in November

it could only be

This month see the last offering of The Room this year and as with Later with Jools Holland on which the night is based, The Room are planning a “Hootenany” style evening New Years Eve Party with a bumber package of entertainment with no less than 11 acts performing on the night.

Performing on stage 1 will be the massively popular Ska/2 Tone band Monkey Spanner, whose infectious beats are a real crowd pleaser, the perfect band for a party night out which November 17th plans to be.

In total contrast of music style on stage 2, will be The Divide, rock band and this band know how to rock, with their outrageous front man Garth Coupland backed by a wall of sound, if you have never seen this band you don’t know what you’re missing.

Stage 3 yet again in total contrast is Trees Lounge Project, a fantastic 3 piece jazz funk/fusion trio, featuring guitar virtuoso Greg Doggett, Karl Doggett on percussion and Steve Amer vocals, Steve and Greg performed as guests at the Room back in June and we are delighted to have them back for a full set.

Stage 4 brings the spirit of Club Uniquity, the acoustic based monthly event at the Dukes Head, Somerleyton.

During the past five nights at The Room, many of the artist who have appeared at the Room, have featured at Club Uniquity so it seemed like a great idea to have them and new artist appearing, Paul Johnson the inspiration behind the club will be appearing with fellow Llewelyn member Mike Page for an acoustic set, returning from last month’s Room, the haunting sounds of Lisa and Jo, who are Yum Yum as well as Jason Parr, who stopped everyone in their tracks at Octobers Room.

Also making a welcome return will be acoustic duo Sam & Daisy, who wowed the audience at Septembers Room, appearing for the first time will be four piece band Route 2, Jack and Roamy Medicine Show, Richard Swift and local musician, singer songwriter and entertainer Bob.

All this makes for the biggest line-up seen at The Room, fitting for this the last event of the year so whatever your musical tastes or likes, come and join in what plans to be celebration of what has been a massive success throughout the year and although it will be Saturday 17th November, just pretend it’s New Years Eve and enjoy the countdown to midnight and PARTY!!!!

G is for Gorleston

G was achieved with a short trip up the A12.

Whilst it was a shame that Great Yarmouth were not at home this weekend and we missed out on seeing their classic main stand, we ended up in neighbouring Gorleston, effectively a suburb of Yarmouth. A relatively new ground, Gorleston's Emerald Park is probably the nicest ground in the Eastern Counties league; fully-enclosed on three sides and with plenty of seating. The visitors for the day were Halstead Town.

The Main Stand

After an entertaining (and cheap) hour in Lowestoft's south pier (a pound each for full game of mini bowling, or "bowlingo" as it is apparently called), we arrived five minutes before kick off, following a slight panic regarding taking a wrong turn upon entering Gorleston. We took up position in the main stand immediately behind the dugouts. There was obviously some tension between the benches, with the Halstead manager apparently having been told not to speak to his Gorleston counterpart.

The sun comes out (at last!)

The game started at a brisk pace, and Gorleston took the lead in the fourth minute; a through ball beat the offside trap, and a Gorleston forward scored with a neat finish from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Gorleston could have doubled their lead, but one of their players decided to palm a superb cross into the net instead of using his head, resulting in a yellow card rather than a 2-0 scoreline. On the half hour Halstead finally created a decent chance; one of their strikers was put through on goal only to shoot wildly off-target.

1-1 at half time, but Gorleston came out of the blocks quickly again at the start of the second half, doubling their lead two minutes after the break; the Halstead keeper saved a low shot, but the rebound was tucked home. This proved only to spur the visitors into life for the first time in the game. Several attacks came and went, and they managed to grab a lifeline in the 59th minute. An overly deep cross was headed towards goal at the far post, rolled across the line, and went in off the other post. Bizarrely there was no reaction from either team other than to trudge back to the centre circle. Three minutes later Halstead almost equalised with a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper but not the post. However, they were given a chance to draw level in the 72nd minute when they were awarded an incredibly soft penalty.

The home fans were not amused, but jeers turned to cheers when the Halstead number nine produced one of the worst penalties we'd ever seen, and scuffed it well wide. After that the game descended into arguments, most notably between the benches, with some home fans joining in too. Halstead continued to press and Gorleston picked up numerous yellow cards. Despite our official status as neutrals, the behaviour of the home bench and fans mean that for the first time this season, we were rooting for an equaliser, though unfortunately it never came.

The open side

Chips score:
8/10 - not particularly impressive, but both the cheapest and largest portion so far helped raised the score.

Cup of tea score:
5/10 - quite small, slow service and no control over anything apart from sugar.

Character of the day:
Again, not many to choose from, but probably the home fan sat behind the goal with the foghorn voice and incredibly good vision that enabled him to see things at the far end of the pitch which the ref had missed.
